Representatives from libraries of different sizes and geographic locations have been called together to create a certification taskforce to review the current certification rules for Indiana librarians. (590 IAC 5)

The committee is still seeking two trustees, one from a class A library and one from a class B library to complete library representation. This committee will meet two to three times to discuss and propose improvements to the existing certification rule. If you would like to nominate a trustee to the committee please contact Emily Schaber at EmSchaber@library.in.gov or call her at 317-234-6217.

The first committee meeting will be held on Friday, July 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Avon-Washington Township Public Library located at 498 North Avon Avenue, Avon, Indiana 46123. The telephone number for the Avon-Washington Township library is 317-272-4818.

Free Workshop! Using PastPerfect to Digitize Your Collections

The Indiana State Library is sponsoring a series of six PastPerfect Museum Software workshops this summer for local organizations that are interested in learning how to digitize and catalog their collections and provide online access through Indiana Memory and the Digital Public Library of America.

The workshops will cover the basics of using PastPerfect Museum Software for providing online access to digital content and supplying images and metadata to Indiana Memory and the Digital Library of America (DPLA). Attendees will learn some basic guidelines for executing a successful digitization project along with specific information on how to use the software to create images and metadata that are compatible with Indiana Memory standards. An introduction to the PastPerfect ONLINE module will be included in the training.

Indiana Memory, since its inception in 2003, has always been inclusive of all of the cultural heritage organizations in the state. Indiana State Library staff worked with PastPerfect to create a way for local organizations using PastPerfect ONLINE to contribute to Indiana Memory to provide greater access to the digital collections.

Heritage Photo and Research Services (Joan Hostetler and John M. Harris) is uniquely positioned to provide this workshop. The firm has been the vendor for two successful LSTA Digitization Grant projects. Each partner has extensive knowledge of PastPerfect and working with local historical organizations.

Joan Hostetler has operated Heritage Photo & Research Services since 1998, specializing in photograph preservation, interpretation, archives management, and digitization. She received an MFA in Imaging Arts/Museum Studies from Rochester Institute of Technology. She is a graduate of the Photographic Preservation and Archives Management Program at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. She previously worked as visual collections assistant and exhibitions coordinator at the Indiana Historical Society.

John M. Harris received a BA in American History from Indiana University and an MA in History Museum Training from the Cooperstown Graduate Programs of the State University of New York. He has worked as educator and exhibits coordinator for the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, served as executive director of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, and was director of the Local History Services Department at the Indiana Historical Society. He was a beta tester for the PastPerfect Museum Software program when it was first conceived and continues to use the software.

The workshops will be repeated at various locations around the state.  They are scheduled to begin at 1:30pm (local time) and end at 4:30pm.  Locations are:
June 8                   Indiana State Library
June 15                 Westchester Township Public Library (Chesterton)
July 13                   Eckhart Public Library (Auburn)
July 20                   Marion Public Library (Marion)
August 17            Monroe County History Center (Bloomington)

Space is limited. Please register here for the above workshops.

ALI seeks graphic design

The Indiana State Library (ISL) and the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI) Resource Sharing Committees are looking for that perfect symbol or logo to represent Resource Sharing in Indiana.

We realize that not everyone can draw, so entries do not need to be final designs, we are just looking for a sketch, a description or an idea that perfectly encapsulates resource sharing in Indiana. This means that this competition is open to idea people as well as to graphic artists.

If you have an idea, please send it in, or if you know someone who is good at this type of work, please share this message with them and encourage them to enter.

The deadline for entries has been extended to 1 July 2015.  Details are available here.

Do you use newspapers as part of your research?  Want to learn more about searching Hoosier State Chronicles, the database providing free, online access to Indiana’s historic newspapers? Then come to a free demonstration at the Indiana State Library on Thursday, May 21 at 1:30pm.   Stefan Boddie, of DL Consulting, the company behind the collection management software, will provide insights into getting the best results for your searches.

Hoosier State Chronicles (http://hoosierstatechronicles.org) provides access to over 230,000 newspaper images and continues to add more newspaper pages each month.

Indiana’s Common Heritage -- Grant Opportunity

Are you interested in promoting local history?  The new grant program called Common Heritage offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities can help.  This grant program will supply funding for day-long events in which members of the public are invited to share their personal collections to be digitized and shared online.   These digitization events are combined with local programs highlighting the community.   Grant awards are for up to $12,000 for 18 months. The application deadline for this NEH grant is June 25, 2015.

The Indiana State Library would like to assist Indiana’s cultural heritage organizations with their efforts to document their local communities.  How the Indiana State Library can help:

• Grant application: Applications must be submitted through the Grants.gov portal.  ISL can provide assistance with getting set up and the actual application process.  ISL will review draft applications for completeness.

• Project planning: ISL will share information on best practices for scanning, metadata creation and digital curation with local organizations working on a grant application.  Sample loan forms and tips for organizing a day-long event will also be available.

• Digitization training:  Training on scanning, metadata creation and how to organize a one-day scanning event will be offered at no charge to local historical organizations.

• Digitization equipment: The digitization equipment available through the ISL Mobile Scanning Unit program will be made available to those organizations that like to borrow rather than purchase equipment with grant funds.  ISL has flatbed scanners, slide scanners, and book scanners available for loan.

• Hosting of collections:  ISL is offering to host the items digitized through this program in CONTENTdm at no cost to the individual organizations.  Collection items will be freely available online.   Grantees can also elect to have these records included in Indiana Memory and the Digital Library of America even if they plan to host them locally.

• Digital preservation:  ISL is coordinating efforts to create a statewide, low-cost solution for digital preservation by creating a statewide collaborative.  Membership will be available in early 2016 for organizations that want access to a trusted digital repository for their digital files.
