Early bird registration has opened for the Association for Rural and Small Libraries annual conference. ARSL 2015 will be held in beautiful Little Rock, Arkansas Oct. 1-3rd,with pre-conferences and tours taking place Sept. 30th. Our conference hotel is the Riverwalk Marriott.
This conference is completely dedicated to libraries that serve smaller and or rural populations. Last year, well over 300 library professionals gathered for #ARSL2014. This year's goal is 500 small and rural professionals together to gain support from, learn from, and most importantly build connections with each other. You may wonder what small is defined as; well we have long said that if you think your system is small or rural, it probably is!
Registration costs for ARSL 2015 begin at $263.50 (member rate),slightly more for non-members. This fee includes 3 days of learning, access to the welcome reception, breakfast (Thurs/Fri.), lunch (Thurs/Fri.), and a Saturday brunch. This year's conference also includes access to all speaker events, including Friday's featured author, PC Cast.
Many pre-conferences are available including a session on emergency planning, accidental leadership, apps, and more. Two planned tours are also available. One is a walking tour of the Riverwalk area. The other is a library tour which includes a stop at the Clinton Presidential Center library!
Registration for the conference, pre-conferences, and tours is available by clicking here.
More information can be found on the ARSL conference webpage.

East 38th Street Library is not only the community's place, but for many - especially children and teens - it's a home away from home. Due to concerns surrounding unruly behavior involving teenagers throughout various Indianapolis communities, the Indianapolis Public Library took initiative to provide a safe and fun environment for teens, ages 12-17, to convene during their spring break on Friday evenings. Thus was born an exciting and well attended "Teen Night Out" event which took place on Friday, March 27th and Friday, April 3rd from 6pm - 9pm after the library’s regular hours at East 38th Street and Brightwood branches.
During these two successful events at East 38th Street branch, a total of 78 juveniles and 43 volunteers, parents and partners participated in evenings of fun, food and fellowship. Activities included jewelry making, card and board game stations and unlimited computer time - which featured a digital scavenger hunt that familiarized teens with the library’s eResources. Also, a presentation was given by Daniel Bullman, Community Affairs Officer with IMPD during which he discussed the Explorer Program - which gives youth an opportunity to learn about careers in law enforcement. The Indianapolis Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo Chess Club provided chess lessons and lastly, the night ended with self-defense demonstrations by the Midwest Karate kids.
Not only did teens enjoy the free pizza, snacks and refreshments, they raved about the opportunity to engage the library freely and enter our free raffle for a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD, MP3 player, digital movie passes and books! Thanks to our partners, every teen left with a prize!! Natalie Wilson, a parent participant stated, “Teen Night Out was entertaining and exciting. I was able to meet other parents with a focus on one thing… keeping our children safe while having fun at the same time. I [also] gained information on the library’s free eResources.”
The Indiana State Library is happy to report that the cost of Info Express will remain the same in 2015-16. Starting in June, libraries will be able to renew their Info Express memberships via the www.infoexpress.in.gov website that now features the ability to print your own invoice and pay with a credit card. This online payment system should make it easier than ever for libraries to participate in the Info Express program.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Michael Hicks at (317) 232-3699 or email dhicks@library.in.gov.
