One of the many services the Indiana State Library offers to librarians and library employees across the state is the opportunity to pursue continuing education. Continuing education comes in many forms, with the most common being webinars. These webinars are conducted by employees of the state library, presented in partnership with other libraries or given by professionals with expertise in certain subject areas. Recent topics have included astronomy, genealogy for kids, library signage, serving adults with disabilities and yoga.
These webinars can all be found on the library's YouTube channel. There are currently more than 100 webinars available under the Webinars playlist. The majority of these webinars are eligible for LEUs. The Indiana State Library's LEU policies can be reviewed here. The webinars can also be accessed via the library's Archived Webinars page.
Not only does the library's YouTube channel host a plethora of webinars, but it's also building an archive of digitized materials from its collection. The latest upload is footage from a 1935 picnic and pageant held at the Old Conner Homestead. Previously, the library has uploaded footage of the first Indy 500 race and a video of notable people and events of early 20th century Indianapolis.
Those interested may subscribe to the library's YouTube channel on the main page.
From September through December, people throughout the Purdue University community and Tippecanoe County will gather to read and discuss the same book, a 2018 translation of "The Odyssey." This is the first translation in English by a woman, Emily Wilson.
Once a year for approximately the last 15 years, local libraries, including the Tippecanoe County Public Library and the West Lafayette Public Library, and nonprofit organizations have organized celebrations and programs based on one book. Their hope is to get people throughout the county to read and discuss the same book. This year’s read brings two big changes to the program; it’s now called the 2019 Big Read and the Purdue University English Department has joined the countywide partnership.
“We like to think of it as a special, inclusive book group everyone around the county can participate in and enjoy,” said TCPL Head Reference Librarian Alison Moss.
Copies of the 592-page translation published by W.W. Norton & Company are available at all local libraries. Print and audio editions may be purchased from area bookstores.
For more information on the Big Read, check the event calendars of Purdue University, TCPL and WLPL.
Beginning next month, the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library will be accepting clean, gently-used Halloween costumes of all sizes - baby, child, teen and adult - for their first-ever Community Costume Closet. Patrons can donate a costume without taking one, take a costume without donating one or donate a costume and take one.
Costumes can be dropped off at the children’s desk during open library hours between Monday, Sept. 23 and Friday, Oct. 4. The library asks that the costumes be in good-to-excellent condition with no rips, tears or stains. The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is located at 1120 Stafford Road in Plainfield.
Costumes will be sorted by size for patrons to browse for a “new-to-you” favorite on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1-4:30 p.m. Swap last year’s princess for a pirate, a bumblebee for a ballerina or a dinosaur for a doctor.
Remaining costumes will be donated to a local nonprofit community service organization. For questions, please contact Youth Services Manager Kristal Hellmann via email or at 317-839-6602 ext. 2127.

This month, the Census Bureau will announce details on the upcoming address canvassing for the 2020 census, explaining its timeline and important details for field operations. Communities in the United States will see Census Bureau employees in their neighborhood during this time, and they might receive a visit.
However, these employees are only verifying addresses. This is in preparation for next year’s census, and they are not conducting an actual count. This press kit describes the purpose and process of updating the Census Bureau’s master address file, which helps to ensure a complete and accurate census. Attend a special webinar on Monday, Aug. 12, 2019 at 1 p.m. for further information.
On Monday, Gov. Holcomb announced that Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch would serve as the chair of Indiana’s Census 2020 Complete Count Committee. The Complete Count Committee program develops and implements a 2020 census awareness campaign based upon their knowledge of the local community in an effort to encourage participation in the census. The coordinating group for the committee consists of Carol Rogers of the Indiana Business Research Center, Jill Carnell of the Indiana Department of Administration and Katie Springer of the Indiana State Library and Indiana State Data Center.
Indiana’s Census 2020 Complete Count Committee will hold a meeting on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, at 1 p.m. Eastern in the Indiana Government Center South Auditorium. The meeting is open to the public.
In early July, the Indiana State Library presented “Libraries and the 2020 Census,” a webinar that detailed the role that librarians and libraries will play in the 2020 census. An archived video of the webinar may be viewed here.
