Communities across the U.S. Answer Call for a Library Card for Every Student

Mayors, county executives, school superintendents, and library leaders from approximately 50 cities and counties are meeting in Washington, DC, today as part of a national initiative to connect students to public library system resources. These communities are among the 60 communities that have answered the call of President Obama’s ConnectED Library Challenge to put a library card in every student’s hand through partnership initiatives.

The “ConnectED Library Challenge: Answering the Call” convening is hosted by the White House with the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It is both a strategy session and a celebration of the community leaders who accepted the President’s challenge last April.  Both the Urban Libraries Council (ULC)(link is external) and American Library Association (ALA)(link is external) are contributing to this important initiative.

Day of Dialog

Day of Dialog is an annual librarian-only gathering which gives a close-up look at upcoming books and the latest trends in the library and publishing worlds. There are 2 separate professional development events for the library and school library communities. The SLJ event is geared towards school and children’s librarians and LJ’s event targets adult librarians. Both provide attendees with high content panels on trends in books, technology and publishing, access to exclusive author signings, free ARCs, and an opportunity to network with colleagues from around the country in an intimate library-centric setting. Both events sell out year after year and as we move from our home base in NY to Chicago this May, we are hoping for an equally stellar turnout this year!

See more about the events online and note that our program and speaker line up will soon be announced.

Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Awards

firefly

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of the Indiana Center for the Book.  This state award is administered by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee made up of professionals in Indiana including teachers, librarians, caregivers, and project coordinators; all of whom are involved in early childhood development.  Picture books serve an important role in the first years of the life of a child.  The purpose of this award is to encourage parents, caregivers, and very young children to interact together with exceptional picture books.

The 2016 Nominees are as follows:

Nose to Toes, You Are Yummy! by Tim Harrington
Two is Enough by Janna Matthies
I Got the Rhythm by Connie Schofield-Morrison
Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
Hooray for Hat by Brian Won

Votes are collected at Indiana’s Public Libraries and other voting locations. New this year, every public library in Indiana will receive 15 print copies of the ballot through the support of TeachingBooks.net.  You will receive your print ballots by mid February. All locations who wish to collect votes are welcome to print out as many ballots as they wish from the website.   Patrons should be instructed to turn their votes in to their participating local public library. Libraries may collect their votes however they wish, but, efforts should be made to allow each child to vote only one time.  The ballot is attached to this email.  If your ballot was scrubbed from the email, feel free to email me and I’ll send you a fresh one.

Other locations like schools, day-cares, and bookstores may collect votes as well, however efforts should be made to ensure that each child is voting only one time. Voting ends at midnight on May 1, 2016. On May 2, please tally the votes from your location for each of the 5 Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award Nominees.  Send those tallies in an email to Suzanne Walker at suwalker@library.in.gov. Emails from locations with tallies will be accepted from May 2nd to May 20th.  On May 23rd, the award will be announced.

Who can vote? Children who are under age 6 as of May 1, 2016 may vote for the 2016 Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award.  It is expected that most children will require help from a parent, caregiver, or librarian.  Children should circle their favorite Firefly Nominee on their ballot and turn it into their local voting location.  Children may also vote as a group by raising hands or pointing to their favorite.  Children may vote one time only if at all possible.  Libraries are encouraged to provide access to the books, have special Firefly storytimes, have voting programs, and promote the awards as they see fit.  Feel free to share your celebrations with the Indiana Center for the Book.

Please let me know if you have questions!  Thank you to the 2016 Early Literacy Firefly committee:

SRCS Deadline Coming Soon

The final deadline for submitting a letter of intent to participate in the initial phase of SRCS is this coming Sunday, January 31, 2016.

As of today, we have 150 libraries who have submitted letters of intent to join SRCS. That group includes: 17 Class A Public Libraries, 43 Class B, 41 Class C, 47 Academic libraries and the Indiana State Library.  This broad pool of libraries includes fourteen of the most popular ILS in the state, including AG Verso,  Evergreen Indiana, ExLibris Aleph, Alma & Voyager, Millennium, Polaris, Sierra, Koha, OCLC WMS, Horizon, Symphony and TLC Library Solutions with a combined catalog of 34 million items.

On Monday, February 1 we will turn over all of the names and contact information from the libraries who have submitted a Letter of Intent over to Auto-Graphics.  They will then approach each of participant with a specific set of questions based upon their local ILS.

We are posting a link of the January 5 WisCat demonstration, along with a transcript of the session and Q & A based upon the chat questions.  The recommendations of the Resource Sharing Committee are still undergoing review, but we hope to get those posted soon.
