The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) announced today that nine school libraries in Indiana have been awarded a $500 collection development mini-grant. The funds were made available to MCLS member libraries through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building in Indiana. According to MCLS Executive Director, Randy Dykhuis, “School libraries are vital to student success, yet many of them do not have enough funds to purchase new materials to support the curriculum, keep up with new formats, and support the love of reading. We are happy to be able to contribute to the important work of school libraries through this grant program.” The selected school libraries plan to use the grant funds to enhance their collections in various ways, including adding popular teen titles, overhauling their classics collection, purchasing books reflecting their school’s diverse student population, expanding ebook and playaway audiobook collections, adding graphic novels, and updating a very outdated non-fiction section. The following libraries were selected: • Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation--Columbus North High School • Danville Community School Corporation—South Elementary Library • Delphi Community School Corporation—Delphi Community Middle School Library • Franklin County Community School Corporation—Franklin County High School (Brookville) • Marian High School, Loesch Family Library (Mishawaka) • Rossville Consolidated Schools—Rossville Middle/High School • South Bend Community School Corporation—Clay Intermediate Center • Vigo County School Corporation—West Vigo Elementary (Terre Haute) • West Central School Corporation—West Central Elementary School (Francesville)

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of the Indiana Center for the Book. This state award is administered by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee made up of professionals in Indiana including teachers, librarians, caregivers, and project coordinators; all of whom are involved in early childhood development. Picture books serve an important role in the first years of the life of a child. The purpose of this award is to encourage parents, caregivers, and very young children to interact together with exceptional picture books.
The 2016 Nominees are as follows: • Nose to Toes, You Are Yummy! by Tim Harrington • Two is Enough by Janna Matthies • I Got the Rhythm by Connie Schofield-Morrison • Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman • Hooray for Hat by Brian Won Votes are collected at Indiana’s Public Libraries and other voting locations. New this year, every public library in Indiana will receive 15 print copies of the ballot through the support of TeachingBooks.net. You will receive your print ballots by mid February. All locations who wish to collect votes are welcome to print out as many ballots as they wish from the website. Patrons should be instructed to turn their votes in to their participating local public library. Libraries may collect their votes however they wish, but, efforts should be made to allow each child to vote only one time. The ballot is attached to this email. If your ballot was scrubbed from the email, feel free to email me and I’ll send you a fresh one. Other locations like schools, day-cares, and bookstores may collect votes as well, however efforts should be made to ensure that each child is voting only one time. Voting ends at midnight on May 1, 2016. On May 2, please tally the votes from your location for each of the 5 Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award Nominees. Send those tallies in an email to Suzanne Walker at suwalker@library.in.gov. Emails from locations with tallies will be accepted from May 2nd to May 20th. On May 23rd, the award will be announced. Who can vote? Children who are under age 6 as of May 1, 2016 may vote for the 2016 Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award. It is expected that most children will require help from a parent, caregiver, or librarian. Children should circle their favorite Firefly Nominee on their ballot and turn it into their local voting location. Children may also vote as a group by raising hands or pointing to their favorite. Children may vote one time only if at all possible. Libraries are encouraged to provide access to the books, have special Firefly storytimes, have voting programs, and promote the awards as they see fit. Feel free to share your celebrations with the Indiana Center for the Book.

Digitizing your collection is not only a great way to increase access to your materials, it also engages patrons on a whole new level and helps communicate your library’s value. But with staff time and resources already spread thin, it can be a challenge to plan and undertake a digitization initiative. The good news is that public libraries across the country have done just that. In “Digitizing Your Collection: Public Library Success Stories,” published by ALA Editions, author Susanne Caro and contributors Sam Meister, Tammy Ravas, and Wendy Walker share lessons and tips for success, showing the way to getting your collection online.
