Higher ed is changing fast right now, and so is
librarianship. Traditional in-person library and information science (LIS)
education provided students with a robust network of peers for support. Over
the last couple of decades, however, trends in higher education have reduced
that automatic peer group—not only asynchronous online courses but also
“unbundling,” in which students take classes at their own pace and from a
variety of institutions. Postgraduate professional development opportunities,
ranging from one-day conferences to workshops to certificate programs, were
already more isolated, and these, too, have felt the further distancing impact
of the digital shift. In addition, the proliferation of new competencies in
librarianship can mean that a given librarian’s coworkers may have few if any
points of overlap with what they do every day or need to learn—especially if
they’re the sole representative on staff of a new library function.

On January 5, 2016 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm there will be a free webinar on WisCat.
WisCat is the Wisconsin state-wide installation of the Auto-Graphic ShareIt software, which will power Indiana’s SRCS system.
This session is free and open to anyone in the library community, however only a limited number of online seats are available, so preregistration is required.
The webinar will be recorded and the link will be posted to http://in.gov/library/SRCS.htm following the session.

At its December 4, 2015 meeting, the Indiana Library and
Historical Board voted to keep the Public
Library Access Card (PLAC) fee at $65 for 2016.
The PLAC
statewide library card program was enacted by the Indiana General Assembly in
1993 (Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-5.1) to allow individuals to purchase a card
which permits them to borrow materials directly from any public library in
Indiana.
Any individual holding a valid Indiana public library card may purchase a PLAC
card. The cost of the PLAC card is $65.00 and each card is valid for 12 months
from the date of issue. The revenue from the sale of these cards is distributed
back to libraries on the basis of net loans.
On December 4, 2015 the Indiana Library & Historical Board (ILHB) voted
unanimously to keep the cost of the PLAC at $65 for the second year.
