The Indiana State Library will be opening a Young Readers Center in 2016! The idea was inspired by the Young Readers Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Indiana Young Readers Center will be a place for kids to learn about the talented authors and illustrators from Indiana and about our great state itself.
The first step in creating this space was building a collection. The Indiana Young Readers Center collection includes materials written or illustrated by Indiana authors and books about Indiana for kids and teens. A portion of this collection is already circulating and available to check out. The Center also houses special, non-circulating collections of autographed books by Indiana authors and illustrators and Indiana state book award winners for children and teens.

MCLS is offering up to 20 $500 collection development mini-grants to school libraries in Indiana that are MCLS members.
These funds are being made available through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building. $50,000 per year for the next five years will be made available on July 1 of each year. MCLS will announce future grant opportunities as funds become available. MCLS has already distributed $40,000 in 2015 to 23 individuals in 13 Indiana libraries for attendance at the Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab, which was held in Detroit, MI in October 2015.
The goal of the collection development mini grants is to assist school libraries that have limited materials budgets and demonstrate real need to add new materials to their collection. Materials may be in any format needed.
Funding eligibility • Applicant must be an Indiana school district library that is an MCLS member. Non-member libraries may fill out an MCLS membership application to become eligible. • Only one application per school district will be accepted. • Awards will be based on need.
Deadlines • The Application deadline is December 30, 2015. • We will send notification and mail a check to grant recipients (payable to the school district) by January 15, 2016.
The application • Download the MCLS Indiana Grant Application • Applications should be emailed to Michelle Bradley, Community Engagement Librarian at bradleym@mcls.org.
Questions Questions regarding the grant should be sent to Michelle Bradley, MCLS Community Engagement Librarian, at bradleym@mcls.org, or call her at 800-530-9019 ext. 125.

In the next few weeks, all public libraries in Indiana will receive a “bundle” (box) of materials from The National Center for Families Learning and Hoosier Family of Readers, Superintendent Glenda Ritz’s literacy initiative. This is the third year of her mission: to build a culture of readers in Indiana by supporting schools and public libraries in their mission to get books in the hands of students and their families. We encourage you to schedule a family engagement event at your library soon to promote her mission. The bundle will contain all the materials you will need to host a family engagement event in your library. Included will be an event guide to help you plan the event, as well as 30 copies each of a parent guide, a poster for each family to help them record their reading, a bookmark for each family that provides conversation starters for parents when reading with their child, and a suggested booklist to encourage reading in a variety of topics and genres. Superintendent Ritz would like to attend your event as her schedule permits. In the bundle, you will find a letter from her with instructions on how to contact her if you would like to invite her to your event. Contact Jill Lyday, Secondary Literacy Specialist/Hoosier Family of Readers Initiative/Indiana Department of Education at jlyday@doe.in.gov for further information or questions.
