Nationwide Grants Give Groups Chance to Learn Latino Culture, History

Latinos may be the largest minority group in the U.S., but many are not familiar with the fact that they have been an integral part of the U.S. since the country's beginnings, and that different nationalities have their distinct history, culture and roots.

To celebrate and inform on the diversity and achievements of U.S. Latinos, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association created Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a nationwide initiative grant to educate communities around the country.

What is INSPIRE and why should I care?

inspire

Webinars have no sugar, salt, trans fats, dairy, gluten, carbs, or anything else “bad.”  Indulge guilt-free in a 50-minute Introduction to INSPIRE with Paula Newcom, your ISL Northeast Regional Coordinator!

Free access for all Hoosiers to millions of articles, hundreds of government websites, and countless catalog records.  Paula will share search tips, as well as how to discover unique collections and explore this reliable tool.

Tell me.  Do you:
• Answer reference questions on Health, Business, Home improvement resources, or almost anything else?
• Work with students or teachers on research assignments?  Do your researchers have not a clue what a primary source is?
• Promote K-12 literacy?
• Help patrons write or update their resumes?
• Need ideas for crafts?

Or:
• Are your patrons preparing for the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion), U.S. Citizenship Test, or SAT?
• Are you curious about Hoosier State Chronicles or Indiana Memory?
• Don’t you just love biographies of fascinating people in history and present day, all in elegantly searchable, sort-able, and bookmark-able collections?!

Yes?  Sounds like you need a TLEU for attending Paula’s webinar on any of the following dates (those are just a few of the resources available on INSPIRE – free for the nice people at home in Indiana):

Interview with Angela Downs

angela

If you have ever called Jake Speer’s office at the Indiana State Library (ISL), then you have most likely spoken to Angela Downs. Angela is the administrative assistant for the director’s office on the fourth floor of the state library. She has been an employee at ISL for a long time and had a lot of interesting points of discussion during our conversation.

Early Literacy Materials from the Indiana Dept of Education

In the next few weeks, all public libraries in Indiana will receive a “bundle” (box) of materials from The National Center for Families Learning and Hoosier Family of Readers, Superintendent Glenda Ritz’s literacy initiative. This is the third year of her mission:  to build a culture of readers in Indiana by supporting schools and public libraries in their mission to get books in the hands of students and their families.  We encourage you to schedule a family engagement event at your library soon to promote her mission. The bundle will contain all the materials you will need to host a family engagement event in your library. Included will be an event guide to help you plan the event, as well as 30 copies each of a parent guide, a poster for each family to help them record their reading, a bookmark for each family that provides conversation starters for parents when reading with their child, and a suggested booklist to encourage reading in a variety of topics and genres.  Superintendent Ritz would like to attend your event as her schedule permits. In the bundle, you will find a letter from her with instructions on how to contact her if you would like to invite her to your event.  Contact Jill Lyday, Secondary Literacy Specialist/Hoosier Family of Readers Initiative/Indiana Department of Education at jlyday@doe.in.gov for further information or questions.
