State Library adding new Education Center 2016

Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) Commissioner Jessica Robertson and Jason Larrison, state architect with the IDOA’s Public Works Division, today announced the official plans for the new State House Education Center during the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. Scheduled to open in October 2016, the State House Education Center will serve as an active learning site for the thousands of visitors the State House and Library attract each year.

“The new Education Center will provide yet another way for Hoosiers and tourists to grow their knowledge on Indiana’s history and how state government operates,” said Commissioner Robertson.  “This center will facilitate exciting learning opportunities for teachers, students and families.”

The Education Center will offer dynamic and participatory exhibits for school groups, families and tours. Visitors will take part in role-playing games that demonstrate how government works, discover and explore items from the Library’s collections, and cast their votes on issues that resonate with young Hoosiers. The State House Education Center’s learning exhibits will support social studies and language arts curricula and enhance the learning experience regarding the three branches of state government. The Center will also provide follow-up resources for teachers, students and their families to connect to the space after the tour.

The Center will be located on the ground floor of the Indiana State Library in a 1,800 square-foot exhibit hall.

Lilly Library announces 'Darkness Before Mourning' series acquisition

Perkins

It is with pleasure that the Indiana University Lilly Library announces the recent acquisition of the papers and manuscripts of author J. Greg Perkins. Dr. Perkins’ generous donation documents the creative processes involved in the making of his monumental work of fiction, the 19-volume series Darkness Before Mourning.

One of the largest works of serious fiction ever created by a single author, the materials were over 40 years in the making and provide a remarkable window into American society, life, families, and personal relationships from the 1950s to the present. Beginning with the first volume in the series, The Announcers, each independent work forms part of a biographical continuum, exploring in profoundly dark semi-fictionalized form the author’s searing experiences. The works are published by Chatwin Books of Seattle Washington.

Born in Kokomo, Indiana, Dr. Perkins is a proud graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was also a postdoctoral Fellow in neurochemistry at the University of Iowa. Perkins has written numerous New Drug Applications (NDAs), Investigational New Drug Applications (INDs) and scientific papers, as well as the co-author of the book, Pharmaceutical Marketing: Principles, Environment, and Practice, 2002.

Northeast Regional Coordinator Paula Newcom discusses her first year at ISL

Paula

Northeast Regional Coordinator Paula Newcom and I recently sat down and had a conversation about her first year working for the State Library. She and I have something in common – we both started working for the State Library last November. The following is an excerpt from our conversation.

RB: It has been almost a year now that you have been working for the Indiana State Library. Tell me about how the year has gone and what the biggest differences are between your current job and what you did as a librarian in the public libraries…

PN: I think that the last year has been very good! I’ve had a lot of new challenges and have learned a lot, but I enjoy the freedom of being able to work at home as well as travel to my different libraries and often drive to the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis to attend meetings.

I have 60 libraries in my region – the Northeast region – and I think I have gone to almost half of them since I have been hired. I have been very blown-away by what I have seen with the different libraries in my area from the smallest to the biggest. They all seem to be doing something unique in each place.  And a lot of libraries have had building/renovating projects which has pleasantly surprised me.

RB: Could you give me an example of that?

Another successful Genealogy & Local History Fair in the books

Judy Russell
Judy Russell the 'Legal Genealogist'

On Saturday, October 24 the Indiana State Library held its annual Genealogy & Local History Fair featuring genealogy experts Keven McQueen and Judy Russell. This year's theme was 'Crime and Punishment' featuring the 'Black Sheep' of family trees.

Many genealogy and history enthusiasts filled the grand hall of the State Library sharing knowledge with both experienced and novice researchers. Patron Ken Henry stated he "found a genealogy answer that has been a 12 year search."

"This is a great example of how the Genealogy & Local History Fair provides patrons with a unique opportunity to research family histories," stated Genealogy Division Supervisor Stephanie Sutton.
