Lawrence Township Students Receive Indy Library Cards

The Indianapolis Public Library and Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township have completed a first-ever initiative to provide all district public school students with Indy Library cards. It represents the first step toward the library’s goal to provide a library card to every public school student in Marion County.

During a celebratory launch event on September 22, MSD Lawrence Township Superintendent Dr. Shawn A. Smith and IndyPL CEO Jackie Nytes congratulated students at Brook Park Elementary School in joining the approximately 15,000 other district students in grades 1 - 12 who are receiving their new cards.

“We are so proud to partner with The Indianapolis Public Library to give our students access to endless academic resources,” stated Dr. Smith. “This is an example of a true community partnership between two great organizations.”

The special new library card, called the e-resource card, will allow students to access the library’s growing collection of digital materials, such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming video, streaming music and magazines, as well an array of online databases to help in their academic research. The card allows for limited borrowing of books and physical materials, but young people can visit any IndyPL location with a parent or guardian to upgrade to a full library card.

“This is so exciting to have every single student in Lawrence Township receive a library card,” said IndyPL CEO Jackie Nytes. “Enriching young lives is one of our important missions, and it all starts now as students will discover a world of information at their fingertips.”

Research provided by the Illinois School Library Media Association demonstrates a strong link between access to high quality library services and academic achievement. By providing access to IndyPL’s online offerings beyond what’s available in a school’s library, students will be inspired not only to become better readers and learners but to develop the digital research skills necessary for later academic success. Additionally, such access will enable MSD Lawrence Township students to complete school work as the district moves to provide them with tablet computers for classwork.

The library card initiative, being launched during National Library Card Week, addresses a key goal in IndyPL’s new strategic plan to strengthen the Indianapolis Public Library’s contribution to formal education and establish partnerships to improve community access to information.

Peabody launches Library Card Sign-Up Month

Peabody

For the last few weeks, Peabody Public Library in Columbia City has been visiting the Whitley County Farmers Market to highlight Library Card Sign-Up Month. Peabody has been giving out INSPIRE bookmarks and pens to anyone who stops by.

When someone signs up for a new card, the library enters the patron’s name in a drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card. Student card sign-ups are entered to win an upgrade to a regular card. Renewal subscription card sign-ups enter for a second year at no charge, and if the patron updates or renews their card, they may win a T-shirt or tote bag.

Drawings will be held October 1, 2015.

Remembering Pete Seeger

The "Remembering Pete Seeger" World Tour is coming to the Warsaw Community Public Library. Spook Handy performed alongside Pete Seeger at festivals and concerts over 50 times from 2003 – 2013. He learned firsthand many of Pete’s songs and the stories behind them. Now, Spook is on a three year world tour bringing these songs and stories and Pete’s message to all 50 U.S states, all 13 Canadian provinces and territories, and many other countries as well. Join us to celebrate Pete's life and legacy on Tuesday, October 20 at 6 PM.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to attend a three-part webinar series on accessibility, Stories of Inclusion, scheduled for October 7, 14 and 28, 2015. The series, developed by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), enlists advocates and experts to explore issues of accessibility and inclusion from the perspective of visitors, staff and program users in museums, libraries, archives and other cultural institutions. Each webinar highlights case studies and examples of inclusive practice, addressing and responding to the first-hand stories of visitors with disabilities.  This event is sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services via the Coalition to Advance Learning in Archives, Libraries, and Museums.

The Indiana State Library will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all of its programs, services, and activities. If you require an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in this program, service, or activity of the Indiana State Library, please contact the agency's ADA Coordinator, Faye Brookins (FBrookins@spd.IN.gov or 317- 233-1184).  Notice of a needed accommodation should be provided as soon as possible to allow time for the State Library to arrange for the accommodation; however, notice of a needed accommodation must be provided to one of the above contacts no later than 48 hours in advance.

Nominations needed for the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award

FireFly

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of the Indiana Center for the Book. This state award, administered by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee, highlights picture books for young children. Picture books serve an important role in the first years of the life of a child. The purpose of this award is to encourage parents, caregivers, and very young children to interact together with exceptional picture books.

Indiana librarians may nominate picture books for the award from June through October 1st each year. What does that mean? That means that we need your nominations now. Have you read a fun picture book in your storytime?  Did you run across a winner during your Summer Reading Program? Have a book that makes you laugh every time you read it?

If you work with youth in a library, either in a school or in a public library, you are eligible to nominate as many titles as you wish. Nominating is easy. Send an email to Suzanne Walker at suwalker@library.in.gov. Include in your email:  Title, Author, Illustrator, and Publication Date, as well as the following justification:  In 100 words or less, please tell us why this book is special with an emphasis on how it supports at least three of the ECRR® practices. In layman’s terms, does the book make you talk, sing, read, write, or play with the children, ages 0-5, with whom you are sharing the book?

Nominations must:
• Be in print
• Be published, in its current edition, within the current award cycle year (that means from January 1, 2014 until now).
• Possess strong child appeal
• Support at least three of the Every Child Ready to Read® practices of Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, or Playing
• Have artistic quality with text that supports the illustrations or a compelling narrative provided by illustrations

The nomination pool will be narrowed down to five titles by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee by January 1, 2016.  Ballots will be released and votes will be accepted until early May.  More information on ballots and how to vote will be available in early 2016.  The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award winning title will be announced on May 23, 2016.
