Carmel Library Welcomes New Director

Carolyn Goolsby

The Board of Trustees of the Carmel Clay Public Library recently announced the appointment of Carolyn Goolsby, MLS, as the new Library Director. Most recently, Ms. Goolsby served as the Director of the Wood Buffalo Regional Library (WBRL) in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.

During her time at WBRL, she instituted teen and seniors programming, a community connection program, built the TOTAL Aboriginal Cultural Corner, and broadened the library’s mission to serve the entire Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo – a specialized municipality of approximately 27,500 square miles, covering most of northeastern Alberta. With such a large service area in a remote northern region, staff had to fly to some communities in a bush plane to provide library services.

During WBRL’s Northern Insights Speakers Series, Goolsby met Arlene Dickinson, Chris Hadfield and Peter Mansbridge (the Canadian Walter Cronkite). She also interviewed Martha Stewart.

In 2002, Goolsby competed on Jeopardy! and won one show. She lost the second day to a Marine Corps Sergeant. She enjoys cooking and is a Kansas City Barbecue Society certified competition judge. She also makes her own mozzarella cheese.

Goolsby is an accomplished singer, and received her Bachelor of Arts in Music (Voice Performance) from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia in 1991. She earned her Master of Library Science degree in 1993 from the University of Maryland.

She began her library career as a federal contractor, working for The Smithsonian Institution, the National Library of Medicine, and eventually the Library of Congress. After the contract positions, she worked at Clemson University and then Florida State University, where in addition to her library duties, she taught Library Science in the Graduate School of the FSU College of Information. Goolsby then moved across the country to work for the Tacoma (Washington) Public Library, where she stayed for more than 5 years.

In 2013, she accepted the Library Director position in Fort McMurray, and while she thoroughly enjoyed her time there, found northern Canada to be a bit too isolating. When the Carmel Library position became available, Goolsby decided to apply. “The more I learned about Carmel, the more interested I got – especially when I heard about the mayor's and the community's commitment to cultural institutions, and Carmel's great quality of life. I already knew that the Carmel Clay Public Library is one of the top libraries in the country – CCPL is doing good work and I want to be a part of that! When I visited in May, Carmel itself completely charmed me. I'm so pleased to be offered the opportunity to be a part of this library and this community,” she stated.
