The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office invites libraries to apply for the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for at-risk teens.
Eligible libraries are located within or working in partnership with organizations that serve at-risk youth, such as alternative high schools, juvenile justice organizations, homeless shelters, foster care agencies, teen parenting programs, residential treatment facilities and other nonprofit and community agencies. Up to 50 grants will be awarded.
Working with small groups of six to 10 teens, grantees will host reading and discussion events for each of three selected book titles. The titles — selected in consultation with librarian advisors and humanities scholars — are chosen to resonate with reluctant readers struggling with complex issues like incarceration, violence and poverty.
Click here for full guidelines and to apply online. Applications are due Sept. 15.

The Indiana State Library is excited to announce that it will be sharing a booth in the Harvest Pavilion with the Indiana Department of Education at this year's Indiana State Fair.
If you plan to attend the fair, please stop by and say hello. We will have new brochures to share with the public as well as INSPIRE materials.
The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) announced today that 23 individuals from 13 Indiana libraries were selected to receive a scholarship from MCLS to attend the 2015 Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab in Detroit Michigan, October 14-16.
The funds were made available to MCLS member libraries through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building in Indiana.
The Harwood Public Innovators Lab is a 2.5 day experience to help libraries learn what it means to turn outward – to use the community as your reference point for choices and action. The Lab is part of the American Library Association’s “Libraries Transforming Communities” initiative, a national plan to help librarians strengthen their role as core community leaders and change-agents.
According to MCLS Executive Director, Randy Dykhuis, “MCLS has been using the community engagement tools of the Harwood Institute and sharing them with libraries in Indiana and Michigan since 2013. We are excited to be able to support training for a cohort of Indiana librarians.”
The selected libraries represent a spectrum of library types, sizes and geographic locations in Indiana, all with a common goal to engage more deeply in their communities.
The following libraries were selected: • Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library • Eckhart Public Library (Auburn) • Franklin D. Schurz Library (Indiana University South Bend) • Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library • Indiana State Library (Indianapolis) • Indiana University East Library (Richmond) • Indianapolis Public Library • La Porte County Public Library • Monticello-Union Township Public Library • Morrisson-Reeves Library (Richmond) • Tippecanoe County Public Library (Lafayette) • Vigo County Public Library (Terre Haute) • Washington-Carnegie Public Library
Indianapolis Public Library Director of Information Technology Services Debra Champ has been honored with the first-ever Chief Technology Officer of the Year Award by the Indianapolis Business Journal and TechPoint. Champ was selected among other finalists in the Not-for-Profit/Government (revenue below $100 million) category.
A 13-year employee of IndyPL, Champ was cited for her direction and development of infrastructure that allows the Indianapolis Public Library to simultaneously serve over 550,000 cardholders and track its collection of 1.8 million items. In addition to creating a long-range strategy for future technologies, Champ has led efforts to incorporate new web-based services into the library’s offerings, such as streaming video, audiobook downloads, and digital magazines. Her work also focuses on maintaining wireless capability at the library’s 24 locations where 10,000 unique devices are used each week by patrons for online access.
“I’m humbled to earn this recognition as a reflection of the dedication of the IT team and others at the Library who value providing meaningful and relevant services to our patrons,” said Champ. “It’s our belief in what libraries do to help people take advantage of today’s information resources that makes our work so exciting and fulfilling.”
Indianapolis Public Library is offering staff training on Patent Searching using Espacenet on Tuesday, Sept 15th from 2:00 – 4:30 pm and Advanced Searching using PubEast on Thursday, Sept 17th from 10 am – 11:30 pm. LEUs are pending. Both trainings will be held at the Central Library Computer Lab at 40 East St. Clair St, Indianapolis, IN. Space is limited. Call 275-4808 if you are interested in registering.
The next certification task force meeting will be on Friday, August 28, from 10:00 to 1:00 (Eastern) in meeting room A at the Avon-Washington Township Public Library (317-272-4818). The library address is 498 North Avon Ave, Avon, IN 46123 (also referred to on Google Maps as 498 IN-267, Avon, IN 46123).
Effective September 1, 2015, the Indiana State Library will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. This is a two hour change from the previous hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m.
The decision to change Saturday hours was made to align with other state agencies in the downtown area.
“The new Saturday hours will align with the Indiana Statehouse and the Indiana State Museum,” said State Librarian Jacob Speer. “This alleviates any confusion to anyone visiting the downtown historic sites and focuses the hours we are open during the times when we have our most customers.”
