The Indiana State Library is excited to announce that it will be sharing a booth in the Harvest Pavilion with the Indiana Department of Education at this year's Indiana State Fair.
If you plan to attend the fair, please stop by and say hello. We will have new brochures to share with the public as well as INSPIRE materials.
The Indiana State Library (ISL) was successfully able to renegotiate its contract with professional development website lynda.com. This means that librarians will continue to be able to access lynda.com for free through the ISL through the 2015-16 year.
According to its website, “lynda.com is a leading online learning company that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals.”
State Librarian Jacob Speer said, “I am happy that we were able to renegotiate this great feature so that librarians can further develop their professional skills on a convenient, online platform.”
Plan to attend this one day professional development event, specifically tailored for Indiana library support staff and paraprofessionals. This event has been designed with YOU in mind and will cover the following topics:
• Technology instruction from eReaders to INSPIRE • Management of staff • Serving students/customers/patrons with disabilities • Collection development and weeding • Engaging your community • And so much more!
Participants will have the opportunity to attend one general keynote session with the dynamic Lauren Burnett and five breakout sessions of your choice, as well as a networking lunch.
Date: September 22, 2015 Where: Indiana State Library Time: 8:30 am - 4:45 pm Cost: $25.00 per attendee / Lunch is included Parking: Free

Morrisson-Reeves Library’s archivist, Susan E. King and professor of history and archivist, at Earlham College, Thomas D. The book is full of photos and stories from Richmond’s illustrious history.
The authors will present their book with a book talk starting at 6:30pm followed by a signing event at 7:00pm in the Bard Room on Wednesday, August 12th. Refreshments will be served.

TASC test preparation is now included in Testing & Education Reference Center. Now you can practice for the test online, zero in on your strengths and weaknesses, and make sure you're ready.
• Take 2 timed, full-length TASC practice tests from each of the five subject areas.
• Find detailed answer explanations for every question.
• Use what you learn to target your study time.
There are five subtests included in TASC test:
• Language Arts - Reading—tests your proficiency at understanding, interpreting, and analyzing informational and literary texts.
• Language Arts - Writing—tests your knowledge of sentence structure, usage, and mechanics, and your ability to create and organize ideas in writing using standard, American-written English.
• Mathematics—tests your skill at solving quantitative problems requiring numerical operations, measurement, estimation, data interpretation, and logical thinking. A calculator is allowed for the first portion of the test.
• Social Studies—tests your knowledge of the basic principles of U.S. and world history, political science, geography, and economics.
• Science—tests your knowledge of topics such as physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, health, and astronomy. You will also have demonstrated your ability to interpret scientific data and apply principles of scientific inquiry.
TASC is now available on INSPIRE. Go to www.inspire.in.gov to try it out.

Effective September 1, 2015, the Indiana State Library will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. This is a two hour change from the previous hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m.
The decision to change Saturday hours was made to align with other state agencies in the downtown area.
“The new Saturday hours will align with the Indiana Statehouse and the Indiana State Museum,” said State Librarian Jacob Speer. “This alleviates any confusion to anyone visiting the downtown historic sites and focuses the hours we are open during the times when we have our most customers.”
