Ideas needed for 2017 Children’s Manual and Early Literacy Manual

Work has begun on the CSLP 2017 Children’s and Early Literacy Manuals, and we would love your input!  We’re looking for ideas for:

• Programs and activities, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) topics, hands-on activities, and programming for a wide range of interests, budgets, and age groups (including intergenerational)
• Books
• Displays and Decorations
• Storytimes
• Incentives
• Outreach to children and families outside the library
• Early literacy tips
• App recommendations
• Encouraging parent/caregiver engagement

Whether you’ve got one book recommendation or an entire program outline, we’d love to hear from you.

Our 2017 theme is “Build a Better World.”  Please submit your ideas to Amanda Struckmeyer at amandacmoss@gmail.com by August 14, 2015; be sure to include your name, institution, city, and state, so that we can acknowledge you in the manual.  Please note whether any fingerplays, rhymes, or songs are original works.  Any format is welcome (book lists, bulleted lists, brief notes, or full paragraphs, for example).  If you prefer a CSLP Program Submission Form, it can be found at http://www.cslpreads.org.

Reading for Life recognized by White House

Nonviolent juvenile offenders are offered an alternative to prosecution through the Reading for Life program. Reading for Life partners with area libraries to rehabilitate nonviolent offenders and uses “in-depth book discussions with a mentor for character development with the hopes that young people will learn to make better life choices,” according to Lincoln Wright of the South Bend Tribune.

TASC Test Prep Now Included in Testing & Education Reference Center

TASC test preparation is now included in Testing & Education Reference Center.  Now you can practice for the test online, zero in on your strengths and weaknesses, and make sure you're ready.

• Take 2 timed, full-length TASC practice tests from each of the five subject areas.

• Find detailed answer explanations for every question.

• Use what you learn to target your study time.

There are five subtests included in TASC test:

Language Arts - Reading—tests your proficiency at understanding, interpreting, and analyzing informational and literary texts.

Language Arts - Writing—tests your knowledge of sentence structure, usage, and mechanics, and your ability to create and organize ideas in writing using standard, American-written English.

Mathematics—tests your skill at solving quantitative problems requiring numerical operations, measurement, estimation, data interpretation, and logical thinking. A calculator is allowed for the first portion of the test.

Social Studies—tests your knowledge of the basic principles of U.S. and world history, political science, geography, and economics.

Science—tests your knowledge of topics such as physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, health, and astronomy. You will also have demonstrated your ability to interpret scientific data and apply principles of scientific inquiry.

TASC is now available on INSPIRE. Go to www.inspire.in.gov to try it out.

State Library announces new Saturday hours effective September 1, 2015

Effective September 1, 2015, the Indiana State Library will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. This is a two hour change from the previous hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m.

The decision to change Saturday hours was made to align with other state agencies in the downtown area.

“The new Saturday hours will align with the Indiana Statehouse and the Indiana State Museum,” said State Librarian Jacob Speer. “This alleviates any confusion to anyone visiting the downtown historic sites and focuses the hours we are open during the times when we have our most customers.”

New Gale education tools available online

Now available through Gale’s In Context suite of products is the ability for students to seamlessly login using Google Account credentials. The Gale In Context products that will provide this new Google functionality include Biography, Canada, Opposing Viewpoints, Science, Student Resources, U.S. History and World History. Now a Google for Education* partner, this new relationship supports Gale’s efforts to evolve from a traditional library content provider into the ed tech space by providing the educational technology, instructional tools and content to help our users be successful in school, work and life.

What’s New?

Some of the changes you’ll see include:

• Seamless User Login: users can login to their Gale In Context resource using their Google Account credentials.

• Integrated Google tools: once logged in, users can easily share and download articles—including their highlights and notes—using Google Apps for Education tools like Drive and Docs.

• Improved access: schools and libraries can provide students with access to their resources via apps available for free download through the Chrome Web Store and Google Apps for Education. These product apps will provide an additional way and make it even easier for students, schools and public library patrons to easily access resources from their tablets and mobile devices.

Coming Soon

This fall Gale plans to integrate similar apps, authentication and tools within some of Gale’s other leading product families including the widely used GVRL, InfoTrac, and Kids InfoBits platforms.

*As a Google for Education partner, Gale uses the most current and popular Google tools to support students as they develop key study and organizational skills. By integrating leading resources into its platforms – such as Google Apps for Education, a free suite of tools that includes Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, and more – Gale helps educators improve student engagement, encourage collaboration and foster critical thinking – from anywhere and on any device.
