National study looks at first generation artists

snaap logo

Most college and university professionals are well aware of the differences that exist between first-generation students and their counterparts, and the challenges first-generation students face in trying to be successful.

The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) has released a new DataBrief looking at Frist-Generation Artists.

For the purpose of the report, first-generation artists are defined as alumni who responded "no" to the question, "were / are either of your parents, guardians, or close relatives professional artists?"

Nearly 80% of all respondents were first-generation artists. A slightly higher percentage of Black (84%), Hispanic / Latino (84%), and Asian alumni (82%) are considered first-generation artists compared with White graduates (79%).

To see the complete DataBrief, click here.

Based at Indiana University Bloomington, SNAAP investigates the educational experiences and career paths of arts graduates nationally. SNAAP provides the findings to educators, policymakers, and philanthropic organizations to improve arts training, inform cultural policy and support artists.
