Fiber artist to craft 2016 Governor's Arts Awards

GAA logo

Daren Pitts Redman, a textile artist from Nashville, Indiana, has been selected to create the 2015 Indiana Governor's Arts Awards.

"It is an extraordinary honor, both exciting and daunting, to be chosen to created the Governor's Arts Awards," Redman said. "I will design quilted wall art that includes my hand-dyed cottons and wood from the Indiana Constitution Elm tree. It will be a square-in-a-square composition inspired by the Indiana Amish quilt makers and will incorporate the radiant seasonal colors found in Indiana."

Redman is an artist with Quilt National '15 and recently finished her Artist-in-Residency at the Grand Canyon National Park. She is a member of Studio Art Quilts Associates, Inc.

"We are very excited the Governor's Arts Award Planning Committee selected Daren's proposal," said Lewis C. Ricci, IAC Executive Director. "Indiana has a deep tradition in quilt art, yet this will mark the first time such a piece has been commissioned for the awards."

More details on the Governor's Arts Awards will be coming soon.

Anderson native among 2016 NEA Jazz Masters

gary burton

Vibraphonist, bandleader, and educator Gary Burton's four-mallet technique on the vibraphone gave the instrument a new musical vocabulary in jazz and a fuller, more piano-like sound than the traditional two-mallet approach.

He was one of the progenitors of jazz fusion in the late 1960s, and had a decades-long educational career at Berklee College of Music.

Burton is among four people selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as recipients of the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters award for their significant accomplishments in the field.

Original compositions to be part of state POL event

POL logo

Following the lead of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Indiana Arts Commission has announced it will include an original poetry composition component to the 11th annual Poetry Out Loud State Finals event.

Last month, the NEA announced it would encourage state champions taking part in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals to take part in an optional competition called "Poetry Ourselves." This companion event will give students another opportunity to showcase their creative talents.

"Many of our Poetry Out Loud contestants write their own poetry in addition to reading and reciting the work of published poets," said Sarah Fronczek, IAC Poetry Out Loud program coordinator. "Adding this dimension, which we are calling "Poetry from Within," to the State Finals will give them another creative outlet."

Read more details about "Poetry from Within" by clicking here.

For more information on Poetry Out Loud, please contact Sarah Fronczek at 317-232-1274 or email sfronczek@iac.in.gov.

ACI logo

After 10 years of providing professional development training via workshops and presentations, the Arts Council of Indianapolis (ACI) announces the launch of its latest program for professional artists.

The Artist Resources Directory was created by the Arts Council in an effort to expand the reach of current professional development efforts to help build the careers of artists who make up the Indianapolis arts community. The new platform will serve as a central hub of information for artists at any stage of their career.

The basic topics of marketing, copyright, contracts, etc. are still covered, but with the new online system the Arts Council is able to share information that might not make it to a larger workshop.

The new resource may be found at www.indyarts.org under the Artist tab.
