October is National Arts & Humanities Month

Fall is here and that means it's time to recognize National Arts & Humanities Month. You can take part in the New Community Visions Initiative by exploring the role of the arts in keeping communities thriving; showing your art's community impact on social media; and proclaiming the importance of the arts with your elected officials.

IAC approves grant modification changes

The Indiana Arts Commission recently approved changes that would effect grant recipients wishing to submit a Grant Modification Form for their funded project.

For individual artists, this would include grant projects for the Individual Artist Program, and for Arts in the Parks.

Any changes to your original grant proposal must first be discussed with your grant program manager before moving forward.

Register now for trademark, copyright & contract law

Registration is still open for a workshop on trademark, copyright, and contract law for the creative community.

Attorney Robert S. Meitus and other lawyers from Meitus Gelbert Rose LLP's Entertainment and Media Law will help artists understand the issues related to these important legal matters.

The workshop will be Friday, October 16, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Bloomington / Monroe County Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave., Bloomington, Indiana.

Breakout sessions will follow for visual artists, musicians, film artists, literary artists and other creative folk to address specific issues with each discipline.

The workshop is free and open to artists throughout Indiana, but space is limited and advance registration is required.

Women Veterans' Memoirs: A Writing Workshop

Women veterans of all ages are invited to join this free memoir-writing workshop series designed to help them craft their military stories through prose or poetry.

Led by Shari Wagner, a published writer and instructor for the Indiana Writer's Center, each two-hour session will include prompts and models, in-class writing activities, discussion, and feedback.

Women at all levels of writing experience are welcome. It is only necessary that you have the desire to develop your writing skills and share your stories.

Workshops will be held twice each month at the Kurt Vonnegut Library, 304 N. Senate Ave., Indianapolis, and will run from October through March (fist and third Tuesdays each month).

Finish the Scary Story contest

Just in time for Halloween, the Lafayette Journal & Courier is sponsoring a writing contest, Finish the Scary Story, and seeks contributions from writers adult to elementary school age. The beginning of the story can be found here, along with details on how to enter.

Deadline for story submission is 5 p.m. October 15, 2015.

Essay contest winner to be honored at Statehood Day

The Indiana State House Tour Office in conjunction with the Indiana Center for the Book and the Indiana State Library is hosting an essay competition for fourth grade students to commemorate Indiana's Statehood Day 2015, a celebration of Indiana's 199th birthday, and the kickoff celebration of our 200th birthday.

This year's theme is Hoosier Bicentennial Celebrations. Winners of the Hoosier Bicentennial Celebration essay contest will be honored at the Statehood Day celebration at one of four participating locations on Friday, December 11, 2015.

The winners, along with their class, will be invited to read his or her essay at one of the four participating locations.

Essays must be postmarked by Friday, October 23, 2015.

High schools encouraged to register for Poetry Out Loud

The Indiana Arts Commission will coordinate the 2016 Poetry Out Loud Indiana State Finals competition February 20, 2016, the 11th annual poetry recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation.

Indiana high schools are encouraged to participate in the event, and registration is currently open. There is no cost to participate, but schools are required to register in advance. The deadline for registration is November 30, 2015.

NEA adds component to Poetry Out Loud

On September 28, Jane Chu, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced several new initiatives as part of the agency's 50th anniversary celebration.

One of them includes an original poetry competition for the state finalists at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C.

"Poetry Ourselves," will give students another platform to showcase their talent while in D.C, for the Nationals.

State Champions will be encouraged to submit a poem for consideration by the judge, however participation in this competition will be entirely optional. More details are expected in coming weeks.

Midwest Writers Workshop to offer manuscript makeover sessions
The Midwest Writers Workshop will offer a one-day workshop on manuscript makeovers. The workshop will be held October 10, 2015 at the Ball State Alumni Center, Muncie, Indiana from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sessions will focus on mystery, fiction, and non-fiction. This workshop invites artists to conspire for the good of their communities. VOCE is looking for tenors and baritones to round out the group. Call for artist qualifications, public art project, City of Phoenix
The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Public Art Program is requesting qualifications for an opportunity to serve as an Artist in Residence at the 27th Avenue Solid Waste Management Facility during the spring of 2016. Up to three artists may be selected for the opportunity. Selected artists will be commissioned to spend four months creating works made from materials found at the site. The mission of this commission is to create works that transform trash to treasure while assisting in the educational programming of the Solid Waste Management team. A Blade of Grass Fellowship, New York, NY
A Blade of Grass (ABOG) nurtures socially engaged art and provides resources to artists who demonstrate artistic excellence and serve as innovative conduits for social change. ABOG Fellows work in leadership roles and in partnership with communities to enact social change.
