Artist qualifications sought for Governor's Arts Awards

The Indiana Arts Commission is currently seeking submission of qualifications from artists interested in creating the 2015 Indiana Governor's Arts Awards.

The successful artist will be asked to create three to five editions of a unique artwork that includes or incorporates part of the Indiana Constitution Elm tree as part of the award piece. A section of the Constitution Elm will be provided to the selected artist. The Arts Commission will provide a commission of $5,000 for creation of the awards.

The call is open to all visual artists 18 years and older who are legal residents of Indiana. The artist must remain a resident of the state during the period of the project.

The deadline for submission is 4:30 p.m. September 15, 2015. The 2015 Governor's Arts Awards will be presented in April of 2016, and will be part of the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration.


Capacity Building Partnership deadline for proposals

The deadline is approaching for submitting Capacity Building Partnership proposals to the Indiana Arts Commission.

The program will provide funding for programs that further develop the professional skills of the staff or cultural organizations, community leaders and / or individual artists.

Proposed activities must be developed to include regional or state-wide audiences. Eligible applications could receive up to $20,000 per project. The deadline to submit proposals is August 12, 2015.

Deadline approaching for 2015 GAA nominations

The deadline is near to make nominations for the state's highest recognition of accomplishments in and contributions to the arts.

Launched in 1973, the Indiana Governor's Arts Awards is jointly hosted by the Indiana Arts Commission and the Office of the Governor. Since the inception, the awards have recognized such notable artists as composers Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter, sculptor Robert Indiana, author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., designers Bill Blass and Michael Graves, and singers Angela Brown and Sylvia McNair.

Previous recipients have also included arts educators, art patrons, volunteers, elected officials, businesses and communities.

ICC founder announces retirement plans

The founder and artistic director of the Indianapolis Children's Choir (ICC) plans to retire in 2016.

Henry Leck started the organization in 1986 and has taken his choirs to New York City and Europe. Choirs have also performed in China, Great Britain, Greece, Central and South America, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, and Russia. More than 3,000 children sing in the central Indiana choir.

"What started as a dream to create a small children's choir in 1986 has become one of the largest and most successful children's choir programs in the country. This has been done with a team of incredible teachers and staff, talented students, devoted parents, a dedicated board of directors and a supportive community," Leck said.

Assistant Director Joshua Pedde will serve as artistic director after Leck retires. Leck's final concert will be April 30, 2016 at Clowes Memorial Hall. He plans to move to Bloomington after his retirement.

Leck and the Children's Choir were 2007 recipients of the Indiana Governor's Arts Awards.

Nomination deadline near for Indiana State Poet Laureate

The deadline to submit nominations for the Indiana State Poet Laureate is approaching.

Nominations should be limited to one, single-page cover letter and a resume or CV detailing the nominee's qualifications and accomplishments. No additional materials should be included with the initial nomination.

Successful nominees must be current residents of Indiana and remain residents during their two-year term of service as State Poet Laureate.

Nominations must be submitted to the Indiana Arts Commission by email only, and must be received by 4:30 p.m. (EDT) Tuesday, September 1, 2015. Nominations should be emailed to Sarah Fronczek: sfronczek@iac.in.gov.

Poets take top honors

The Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award recently announced its 2015 National and Regional Author Award winners and Emerging Author Award finalists.

Poet and Purdue University professor Marianne Boruch is the National Author Award winner and will receive a $10,000 cash prize. Indiana University Lilly Professor / poet-in-residence Adrian Matejka is the Regional Author Award winner and will receive a $7,500 prize.

Laura Bates, Skila Brown, and Clifford Garstang are finalists for the Emerging Author Award. The Emerging Author Award winner will be named at the October 10, 2015 Award Dinner and will receive a $5,000 prize.

Arts in the Parks grant deadline approaching

Arts in the Parks, a partnership between the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, will enable the creation of arts activities for the public to enjoy at parks and forests across Indiana.

Endorsed by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, the program also celebrates the Centennial of Indiana State Parks and the 50th anniversary of the Arts Commission.

IAC seeks letters of interest for PACE

The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) is seeking letters of interest for two new partnerships in the arts education program known as PACE (Partnering Arts, Communities and Education).

Established by the Commission in 2014, PACE currently supports four partnerships in the state at an annual funding level of $10,000 each.

Since PACE programs are intended to continue for successive years at the initial funding level, the Fiscal Year 2016 budget can support the four pilot partnerships and expand the initiative to include two new programs.

Call for entries, Open Space: Art About the Land
Open Space: Art About the Land is an art competition and exhibition which seeks to recognize and encourage artists in Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. this call is open to any artist 18 years and older residing in Indiana. Any work, completed in the last three years, in any media addressing the spirit of open space with reference to the land, including experimental and interpretive work, is welcome. Youth auditions, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Indianapolis
The Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) announces open auditions for young actors ages 17 and under. The auditions will be held August 18 and 19 from 4 - 8 p.m. This season, IRT will have youth roles available for April 4, 1968; Peter Rabbit and Me; A Christmas Carol; Fences; and To Kill a Mockingbird. NICHE magazine is accepting applications for the 2016 NICHE Awards, a prestigious juried competition recognizing excellence in fine craft design. Auditions for Wisdom Tooth Theatre Project, Indianapolis
Wisdom Tooth Theatre will hold auditions September 26, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Indyfringe Basile Theatre, 719 E. St. Clair Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Auditions will be held in the order of arrival. You may be asked to read later in the day.
