So what's on your bumper?

Beginning July 1, you will soon be seeing a new version of the Celebrate the Arts license plate on Indiana roads. All newly purchased Arts Trust plates will have a new look.

The new design features a bolder design of the beloved "dancing star" figure leaping over a stylized silhouette of Indiana.

The Arts Trust license plates are available at any branch of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and can also be ordered online.

Every purchased or renewed Arts Trust plates generated $25 for the Indiana Cultural Trust Fund, which helps provide additional support for arts education programs in Indiana. Click here for more information.


Proposals sought for Capacity Building Partnership Program

The Indiana Arts Commission is currently accepting project proposals for a new Capacity Building Partnership Program opportunity.

The Capacity Building Partnership Program will provide funding for selected programs that further develop the professional skills of the staff of cultural organizations, community leaders and / or individuals artists.

Proposed activities may rand in scale and formality, but must be of local, regional or state appeal and address one or more of the program goals.

Eligible applicants could receive up to $20,000 per project. The deadline to submit proposals is August 12, 2015.

Bicentennial Medal deadline nears

The Indiana Bicentennial Commission, assisted by the Indiana Arts Commission, seeks an artist to create the obverse design (heads) for a commemorative medal celebrating the 200th anniversary of Indiana statehood. The State Seal of Indiana will be featured on the reverse side of the medal.

The winning artist will receive a $5,000 cash award for their design.

The work must be reflective of Indiana's 200 years of history. For more information, click here.

The Wabash Watershed Indiana Poetry Awards 2015

Indiana Poet Laureate George Kalamaras recently announced that submissions are now being accepted for The Wabash Watershed Poetry Awards 2015.

Poems will be split into two categories, "Social Justice" and "Indiana History." One winner will be chosen from from each. Additionally, there will be two finalists chosen from each category. All six poems - each winner and the finalists - will be published on The Wabash Watershed, the official website / web magazine of the current Indiana Poet Laureate.

First prize winners in each category will receive an award of $100. Second and third place in each category will receive $50 each. contestants may submit to both categories, but may submit only one time to each category.

Submit 1 - 3 poems (or a total of 100 lines of poetry for the entire submission) to indianapoetryawardsubmissions@gmail.com.

There is no entry fee. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. July 1, 2015.

NEA accepting Our Town grant applications

2016 marks the sixth year of Our Town, the National Endowment for the Arts' (NEA) primary creative placemking program, providing funding that supports local efforts to enhance quality of life and opportunity for residents, increase creative activity, and create a distinct sense of place.

Grants in 2016 will be available for projects in arts engagement, design and planning, and in knowledge building.

The application deadline for the 2016 Our Town program is earlier than in years past and is on September 21, 2015.

Guidelines and application materials for 2016 Our Town program are in the Apply for a Grant section of the NEA website.

Since the program's inception is 2011, the NEA has awarded 256 grants totaling more than $21 million in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, the NEA has created the online resource Exploring Our Town, with more than 70 case studies and lessons learned from organizations working on communities large and small, urban and rural across the country.

In July, the NEA will announce the 2015 grantees.

Blue Star Museums offers free admission to military families

Below the jewel-colored spring landscape by American artist Ernest Lawson that hangs in the Music Room of Washington, D.C.'s Phillips Collection, military families and others gathered for the sixth annual launch of Blue Star Museums.

A collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America, Blue Star Museums offers free admission to the nation's service members, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2015. This year, more than 2,000 museums in all 50 state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the program.

"We are very appreciative of our partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families and the U.S. Department of Defense," said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. "What a great way for the arts community to say thank you to our service members and their families for the sacrifices they make on our behalf, every day."

Ball State University to receive NEA Big Read grant
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced early this month that Ball State University is among 75 nonprofit organizations that will receive grants totaling more than $1 million to host a Big Read project between September 2015 and June 2016. Lafayette Arts Center Stage project scores place-based award
Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann announced early this month the Indiana Office of Tourism Development and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs awarded 11 communities funding for quality of place initiatives through the Place Based Investment Fund. One of the projects is the Lafayette Arts Center Stage, a series of themed public art installations combined as one project, located on Main Street in Lafayette's arts and culture districts. A total of five art installations will include a sculpture, a Seurat inspired mural, an annual renewing performance mural painted during a weekend event, two art pads to be filled by artists and a custom designed crosswalk. Orleans receives state grant for outdoor stage

Mural brings a blast of color to Bedford

California governor modestly increases state arts funding
Gov. Jerry Brown has gone from an arts Scrooge in January to an arts Santa Claus of sorts in May. State tax coffers have filled faster than expected this year, and the governor's annual "may revise" of the original spending plan he proposed in January would share a modest morsel of the wealth - $5 million - with the California Arts Council, the state's arts grant- making agency. Survey: Parents, teachers value music education
Teachers and parents want to expand music programs in schools, according to a recent survey. The survey included input from 1,000 teachers and 800 parents. Transforming America's communities through the arts
Americans for the Arts (AFTA) recently announced Transforming America's Communities Through the Arts, an initiative designed to increase understanding of the value of the arts and investment in the arts. Most inspiring cities for young artists ranked
In our data-obsessed era, we tend to think that any question can be solved by just looking at statistics, indexes, or rankings - even when it comes to something as elusive as the best place to find artistic inspiration. The educational website WorldWideLearn recently culled data from the American Community Survey and the Local Arts Index to rank the 15 most creatively inspiring cities in the United States for aspiring young artists and art students. Artist-friendly Portland rents are pricing out artists
Portland artist Tori Abernathy has been booted from two art studios since 2011. Following her evictions, according to her, the landlord either jacked up the rent for the new tenant or demolished the space. NALAC receives Ford Foundation grant
The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) has received a $750,000 grant from the Ford Foundation's Arts and Culture Program in support of a two-year project meant to foster the organization's growth, sustainability, and capacity to support Latino artists and cultural organizations. The purpose of the grant is the continuance of NALAC's targeted programming and advocacy for cultural equity among Latino artists. (source: NALAC)

Iconic dance teacher Maggie Black was 85
Maggie Black, who for decades earned renown for teaching famous ballet and modern dancers how to move in ways, as she put it, that "humans weren't really made to do," configuring their bodies to avoid injuries and even to heal them, died May 11 at her home in East Hampton, New York.
