Columbus Sculpture Biennial adds Dale Enochs work

dale enochs sculpture

A sculpture by Bloomington artist Dale Enochs (left) was installed recently in Garton Plaza in Columbus, Indiana. The work, titled Counterpoint, is made of Indiana limestone, powder coated steel, stainless steel hardware, and gold leaf.

On its base, the work stands roughly 16 feet tall. It was fabricated specifically for the Columbus Indiana Sculpture Biennial.

"Counterpoint is architectural in form and dynamic in visual movement," Enochs stated in his submission materials. "The overall composition is a delicate balance of light and dark forms working in unison creating a visual tension and a structural dance."

Enochs has worked as an independent artist for 28 years and has completed over 17 public art commissions. His work is in private, public, corporate, and museum collections in the United States, Japan, and China.

"I have wanted to install one of Dale's works in Columbus for a long time," said Karen Shrode, executive director of the Columbus Area Arts Council (CAAC). "Anyone passing through the Indianapolis International Airport will surely have experienced his wonderful piece Elemental Indiana, a huge two wall relief that is both massive in scale and delicate in treatment. We are honored that Dale has chosen to create a new work just for the Sculpture Biennial."

Counterpoint represents the seventh sculpture to be installed as part of the 2014 Columbus Indiana Sculpture Biennial, and will be on display for two years in Garton Plaza near Peter Lundberg's Daquqi.

The Biennial is funded through an award from the Efroymson Family Fund and private donations from Johnson Ventures and the Hutch Schumaker Family Foundation. Installation assistance was graciously provided by Taylor Bros. Construction Co., and South Central Roofing.

A Tale of Two Southern Indiana artists

horsehair hat band

Janet Alexander and Donna Baldacci, are both artists from Floyd County in southern Indiana.

Janet creates custom jewelry and hat bands out of braided horsehair (left), while Donna is a stained glass artist focusing primarily on historic stained glass conservation.

Different disciplines to be sure, but another thing the two woman have in common is they are both recent recipients of Individual Artist Program grants from the Indiana Arts Commission.

Janet used her $2,000 grant, along with her own money, to study with a master teacher in Canada to enhance her talents. Donna purchased a programmable kiln enabling her to expand her painted and fired glasswork.

The two women have something else in common too; a desire to use their talents, their "labor of love" to give back to others.

Both artists were recently featured in a feature article in the publication SoIn.

Camp Yes, And -

camp yes and

Camp YES, AND - is an improvisational theatre camp for teens on the autism spectrum and teachers presented by the Center on Education and Lifelong Learning  at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC) at Indiana University.

Improv is fun, but not everyone realizes that it also is a highly refined system of observing, connecting, and responding that has one major rule: Yes, and. At its heart, improv is about group agreement and support - saying yes to each other and building something new and wonderful together.

A growing number of arts organizations offer improv classes for teens on the autism spectrum to support them in developing relationships and social cures, flexible thinking and communications skills. Parents and teachers also report that improv classes have helped them to see teens on the spectrum in a whole new light.

Camp YES, AND is the first program of its kind in Indiana. Its innovative approach combines a camp experience for teens with professional development for teachers. The camp directly serves teens and teachers; plus, it builds local capacity to expand and sustain the work.

For more information about the camp, visit the registration site http://tinyurl.com/CampYesAnd.

The IIDC also has launched its first ever peer-to-peer funding campaign to raise funds for camp scholarships. Individuals interested in donating may visit https://iufoundation.fundly.com/campyes-and.
