Call for Bicentennial Medal designs

The Indiana Arts Commission in partnership with the Indiana Bicentennial Commission seeks an artist to create a commemorative medal recognizing the state's 200th anniversary.

The call for artists is now open to any permanent, legal resident of Indiana, 18 years-of-age or older. Applicants must be willing to work with the selection committee to make design changes, if needed, and willing to meet all project deadlines.

Artists may submit up to three designs with their application. Subject matter for the design(s) must be reflective of Indiana's 200 years of history. To see a complete list of the design submission guidelines and requirements, please click here.

The winning artist will receive a $5,000 cash award for their design. Deadline for submitting the application is 4:30 p.m. (EDT) Monday, June 29, 2015. Applications must be submitted through Cafe, the online call for entry system used by the Arts Commission for this program, at https://www.callforentry.org.


New release of unpublished Wes Montgomery songs

A Wes Montgomery CD release party will be held May 12, 2015 at the Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana to mark the release of newly discovered live and studio recordings of the legendary guitarist and Indianapolis native.

Resonance Records recently announced the recordings "In the Beginning" which not only features Montgomery, but a cast of Indy jazz notables such as Alonzo "Pookie" Johnson, Buddy Montgomery, Melvin Rhyme, Sonny Johnson, Paul Parker, and many more.

The recordings include a 1955 Epic Records session produced by Quincy Jones, (courtesy Sony Music), newly discovered 78 rpm sides with Wes as a sideman recorded for Spire Records (1949), a live recording from the home of sister Ervena Montgomery, Indianapolis (1956), live recordings from The Turf Club (1956), the Missile Lounge (1958) in Indianapolis, and the C&C Music Lounge in Chicago (1957).

The CD release event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour panel discussion followed by a cocktail meet and greet with entertainment by solo guitarist Joel Tucker. The "Indy Guitar Summit" featuring Bill Lancton, steve Weakley, and Frank Steans begins at 8:00 p.m.

Admission is free on a first come, first served basis. The event is sponsored by Resonance Records, The Jazz Kitchen, The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation, and Indy Jazz Fest.

Wes Montgomery "In the Beginning" will be available to purchase on both 2-CD and 3-LP sets, and will be provided that day by LUNA Music.

Documentary on artists with disabilities seeks support

The National Arts & Disability Center (NADC) announces that documentary filmmaker Victor Ilyukhin has launched a crowd funding campaign for the new documentary "Two and Twenty Troubles," a film about artists with disabilities struggling to make it in New York City.


The social media funding campaign will enable the film to be presented to a larger audience, moving the conversation forward on disability rights.

The film has been in production for more than two years in association with Nicu's Spoon Theater Company, a unique organization whose mission is to provide equal opportunities to actors with disabilities.

Former GAA artist featured in Indy exhibition

GAA Award 1997 original

Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis will feature Lois Main Templeton in the solo exhibition "It's the Way They Mingle," New Work by Lois Main Templeton opening May 1, 2015.

Templeton is an iconic figure in the Indianapolis visual arts community with decades of artwork, exhibitions, and collaborations in the city. Her expressive painting style which often incorporates text and gestural black lines has set her apart and made her one of the most revered and beloved contemporary painters of our era.

"It's the Way They Mingle," will be on exhibit May 1 - 29. An opening reception will be held May 1, 2015 from 5 - 9 p.m. with the artist on-site from 5 - 7 p.m.

Lois created the 1997 Indiana Governor's Arts Award (above).

Former IAP recipient named Visual Arts Director

Kim Anderson

Kim Anderson was recently named Visual Arts Director for Arts Place, Inc. Portland, Indiana.

Among her responsibilities is the direction of the Arts in the Parks program. Anderson will also coordinate and curate the exhibits at the Portland Center of Arts Place as well as the ArtWorks Program.

Anderson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis on ceramics from West Virginia University. She received a Masters of Fine Arts from Wichita State University. Before coming to Arts Place, Anderson was an instructor of art and computers at Montpelier Elementary School. Prior to that she was an assistant professor at Ball State University.

Anderson continues to make ceramic art out of her home where she built her own kiln in 2003 with a grant for the Indiana Arts Commission's Individual Artist Program.

Sullivan Fortner wins Jazz Fellowship awards

The American Pianist Association (APA) announced Sullivan Fortner as the winner of the 2015 Jazz Fellowship Awards.

The announcement was made after the final round of performances March 28 at Indianapolis' Hilbert Circle Theatre (left).

Fortner joins the illustrious past winners including Aaron Diehl, Dan Tepfer, and Aaron Parkes, among esteemed others.

Selected from a field of five finalists, Fortner was granted a cash prize of $50,000, the largest prize in the world for a young jazz pianist. Additionally, he will be offered the opportunity to record with Mach Avenue Records and will receive in-kind career development for two years.

Arts Council hosts Creative Renewal Events

Arts Council of Indianapolis

The Arts Council of Indianapolis is currently celebrating their 2013-2014 Creative Renewal Arts Fellows with a special retrospective group exhibition at the Indianapolis Art Center. The show is currently open, and will run through June 7.

"The retrospective is always an exciting highlight for us. It is truly a rare and unique opportunity to bring together some of our most accomplished Indianapolis-based artists from such disparate fields and share their work in one event," said Shannon Linker, Vice President of the Arts Council. "We will have poets and musicians represented next to sculptors and photographers. The energetic atmosphere created by the current Creative Renewal Arts Fellows mixing with the newly announced round of fellows is one of sheer joy."

The 2013-2014 Creative Renewal Arts Fellows will also be celebrated on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 6 - 9 p.m. during a special evening of music at the Jazz Kitchen featuring select Creative Renewal Arts Fellows including Rob Dixon, Cathy Morris, and John Alvarado. The event is open to the public.

Deadline near for Bicentennial Book photo contributions

Celebrating 200 Years

Governor Mike Pence is inviting amateur and professional photographers across Indiana to submit their favorite images of the state for possible inclusion in a coffee table book commemorating Indiana's 200 years of statehood.

Photos must be taken in Indiana and should reflect one or more of the follow categories: natural environment and landscape; buildings and architecture; cities and towns; farms and fields; the Hoosier people; schools and libraries; transportation; business and commerce; medicine and health; religion and philanthropy; government; media and communication; arts, culture and entertainment; and sports.

Images must be uploaded in .jpg / .jpeg format with quality resolution (300 dpi).

Deadline for submission is May 15, 2015.

NALAC extends grant deadline

May 21, 2015 is the deadline for artists, collectives and community-based organizations in the United States, Mexico and Central America engaged in a continuous and ongoing artistic exchange to apply for a Transnational Cultural Remittances Grant from the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC).

Herron announces year-end celebration

Look / See, Herron School of Art and Design's celebration of the academic year end, kicks off Thursday, May 7, 2015 with a full slate of events at both Herron buildings.

To start the party off, the Honors and Awards ceremony will be held in the IUPUI Campus Center at 4:00 p.m. The program will recognize the accomplishments of students and faculty alike.

Then it's on to the 2015 M.F.A. Exhibition beginning at 5:00 p.m., which showcases pinnacle works by master's degree candidates Brent Aldrich, Stephanie J. Beisel, Carly Connelly, Di Sun, Matthew Eickhoff, Jonathan Love, Andres Marcial, Kristen Jane Morsches, Katie R. Smith, Stephen Smolinski, Shelley Spicuzza and Jac Tardie.

For the first time, Herron master's degree candidates in Art Therapy Bonnie Burke, Chelsea Leeds, Elisa Pamelia, Meghan Sullivan, Mu-Chien Tsai, and Kaycee Wilson will have a display that explains their discipline and includes versions of their theses for the public to view

Master's degree candidates in Visual Communication Design Kaelyn Donnelly, Jennifer Smerdel, and Nicholas Walters also will have an interactive exhibition including panels that describe their research processes, outcomes and contexts.

The culminating exhibition takes up all the available gallery space in both Eskenazi Hall and Eskanazi Fine Arts Center.

The Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program supports writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants, ranging from $15,000 to $50,000, issues directly to 20 individual authors a year. Call for sculptural light artist, Jeffersonville, IN
Artists are invited to apply for a commission in Jeffersonville, Indiana to create a family of permanent, outdoor, sculptural lighting artworks adjacent to City Hall, the Clark Memorial Hospital and the Claysburg Neighborhood. The commission desires work that creates a lively and welcoming corridor in an area that serves a diverse, ethnic, and multi-generational community. Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas is seeking entries for the 20th annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Up to 7 sculptures will be chosen with each artist receiving an honorarium which has been increased to $1,500 this year in honor of the 20th anniversary. Call for public art, Kokomo, IN
The Kokomo Art Association (KAA) and the Greater Kokomo Downtown Association worked together with other Kokomo businesses and organizations on an alley revitalization project called Artist Alley. The committee seeks to host the installation of public art projects which will remain on exhibit for a period of 4 - 18 month intervals, outlined by the nature and content of the installed artwork. NALAC announces Regional Art Training Workshop
