Don't Crowd the Plow

Plow

When approaching a plow truck stay back at least 50 ft. or 2-3 car lengths, due to road conditions and so our plow operators can see your vehicles. Snowplow operators are extremely safety conscious, but they need your help. Stay back and let them safely do their job of cleaning the road for you. Don’t take a chance. Don’t crowd the plow! Watch this Lake County video about safety tips when driving this winter. Precautions stated in this video are universal for local public works snow plows in Highland Park, Highwood, and Deerfield.

Annual County Board Expense allowance increased to $7000

The 2015 Budget increased the expense allowance for each board member from $4500 per year to $7000 for travel, office supplies, and mailings. This amount does not include mileage, electronic devices, cellular charges, etc. Several board members requested an increase in this amount so they could communicate more often with direct mailings to their residents. Mass mailings to residents is usually the bulk of these funds used. Our Board Rules of Order which increased this expense allowance to $7000 was voted on at our Rules committee and the full County Board in December.

Of the $9000 ($4500 times 2 years) that was put in my expense account since 2013, I have spent $4485.31 dollars mostly on a single mailing to residents in 2013. Since I did not spend $5514.69, this money will be put back into the general fund and is available for other capital and/or operations of Lake County Government. I have made a commitment not to spend the additional sums the Board voted on for 2015-2016 and will again look to minimize any spending of the remaining discretionary dollars.

Direct mailings are expensive and can cost upwards of $5000 to reach all 34000 residents we represent. Do you think I should spend County funds to send out mailings to inform residents about Lake County Government and my actions on their behalf? Please respond and let me know your thoughts at smandel@lakecountyil.gov .

A life saved in Deerfield from Heroin Overdose

A 29 year old woman overdosing from heroin was saved when naloxone was injected by the Deerfield police. The Lake County Opioid Initiative that created this program was spearheaded by our States Attorney, Sherriff Office, and our Lake County Board Member Carol Calabresa in 2013. Grants were received by Lake County to train our local police department and supply the naloxone injections. Read the Tribune Article on this event.

Helping our Students learn sustainable practices in Lake County.

Dave Wilms, a retired Stevenson HS teacher is working with Highland Park High School Green Club to harness solar energy as part of a sustainable school for the 21st Century. Principal Tom Koulentes along with Howard Hill, science teacher and environmental advocate, are helping us provide our children with the tools they need help to meet the sustainability challenges we are facing now and in the future. As our schools are facing extreme economic challenges, this solar energy program payback is an exceptional positive cash return on dollars spent. Go get it!

Dave Wilms recently worked with Libertyville schools to install solar panels that will not only save residents money but will provide a great example for residents and students to push forward on a clean and sustainable future. These programs also produce much needed Lake County Jobs.

The reduction in solar panel costs and funding from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation is making the economics really work to go solar. I am hoping our Lake County and Forest Preserve governments, in which I serve, will be able to take advantage of these opportunities and further provide leadership on this front by providing additional examples of success.
