Protecting the Consumer

Open sign

To promote transparency and maximize information for consumers, Illinois law requires Lake County-based sole proprietors or general partnerships doing business under a name other than their own to file an "Assumed Business Name" application with the County Clerk.

The Assumed Business Name application asks for the business’ name, purpose, and location along with the owner’s name and address. To further inform the public of the owner's intent to operate under an assumed name and make the business name a public record, a legal notice is required to be published in a local newspaper.  An amendment to the original filing must also be registered with the Clerk when there is a change in business ownership, contact information, or address.

To assist customers who have a question about a company’s identity or need contact information, the Clerk’s public records are in place to provide the business owner's name and address.

National Change of Address (NCOA) Automatic Voter Registration Updates

Mailboxes

Have you moved and filed a change-of-address with the U.S. Post Office?

If so, your voter registration record will now be automatically updated per a new statue (10 ILCS 5/1A-16.8). The National Change of Address (NCOA) is the system the post office uses to forward mail after the submission of a change of address.

Upon receiving NCOA updates twice a year from the Illinois State Board of Elections, the Clerk's office will update the voter registration record and mail a confirmation letter and new Certificate of Registration card to each voter whose new postal address is within Lake County. This gives the voter the opportunity to reject this permanent voter registration update.

If the postal address update is outside of Lake County, the Lake County record is canceled due to the automatic transfer to the other jurisdiction; however, a confirmation letter is mailed to the voter to give the same opportunity to reject this permanent voter registration update as well.
