The
third annual Waukegan Cares Foundation’s “Wauk for Awareness” 5K event will be
held Saturday, August 22. Designed to raise awareness and support the Lake
County Suicide Prevention Task Force, the walk’s warm up time is 10:30 a.m. at Founders
Park, 10385 W. Beach Rd. in Beach Park.
Registration
for the 5K fundraiser is $25, which includes a free lunch. Those who register
before August 1 will also receive a free event t-shirt. Registration will be
accepted up to the time of the walk. To register to walk, please contact Tom

The
5K will be held on Founders Park’s track. Walkers will step off at 11 a.m. after
brief remarks by Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran. The festival will feature a
police dunk tank, a police K-9 demonstration, a jump house and wellness
screening as well as a paid lunch for participating walkers. Approximately
25 booths of agencies that have services for the community will also be providing information tables.

Suicide
is a serious public health problem that can have lasting, harmful effects not
only on individuals attempting suicide, but also their families, and
communities. In 2014, the number of suicides in Lake County was 69, and as of
June 30, 2015, the Lake County Coroner’s Office had reported 30
suicides. The Lake County Health Department is a member of the Lake County
Suicide Prevention Task Force, which strives to deepen awareness, prevent
suicide and save lives through education, linkage to resources, and treatment
