Property tax payments

property tax

Your first installment of this year’s property taxes was due June 3. If you are late, you can still make payments at the Lake County Treasurer’s office.  Your second installment is due September 3.

In November each year, any unpaid taxes plus interest and penalties go to a tax sale. Registered tax buyers bid on paying those taxes in exchange for a tax lien on the property. The bids are in the form of the lowest interest rate they’re willing to charge, with the lowest bid winning. Only the unpaid taxes are sold, not the ownership of the property.

The property owner has a minimum of 2 years after the sale to pay or “redeem” the taxes and remove the tax lien. The tax buyer can extend that redemption period to a maximum of 3 years. If the tax lien is not redeemed by the property owner, the tax buyer can foreclose on the property and take ownership after the expiration date.

To remove or redeem the tax lien on the property, you can pay the taxes and penalties in full at the County Clerk’s office. Using your PIN (Property’s Permanent Index Number), you can visit LakeSoldTaxes.info for a breakdown of amount owed, next scheduled penalty increase, and the last date to redeem your property. Information is updated nightly.
