Q&A
Canine flu in Evanston
Evanston veterinarians have reported several cases of canine influenza, a very serious and highly contagious disease. Symptoms include persistent and lingering cough, lethargic behavior, a poor appetite and a fever. If you observe or suspect your dog may be suffering from any or all of these symptoms, the animal should be seen by a veterinarian. For more information, visit cookcountyil.gov/animal-rabies-control-home.
Thanks to Evanston’s finest
In
recent months, residents and others have seen two devastating house fires in
our ward. As a result, we’ve witnessed the rapid response of our fire and
police personnel, coordination of emergency services with several neighboring
communities and assistance from other providers, such as the Red Cross. Their
actions were not only swift, but also thoughtful and caring. Strong wind played
a role in each fire and, in the earlier fire, extremely cold temperatures
prevailed.

As an additional means of
helping the Froeter family recover from the devastating fire at their home, 6th
Ward resident Rachel Hanrahan has set up an online fundraising page to allow
people to make a donation via Paypal. To make a donation, visit youcaring.com/emergency-fundraiser/froeter-family-fire-fund/325999.
U.S. Post Office service problems
Due to the numerous
complaints from the area, Evanston has been placed in “escalation #2” status through management operations. All complaints
that come through United States Postal Service (USPS) Consumer Affairs are routed directly to Evanston
Postmaster Ackerman and Area Supervisor Wulf.
The USPS is requesting that all complaints, concerns and compliments be reported directly by calling
1-800-275-8777. This is the fastest way to address delivery issues. If an issue is not resolved within 24 hours, Ms. Wulf will intervene. She will attempt to reach residents between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m.
Ms. Wulf informed City
staff that she, in cooperation with the Postmaster, have instituted follow-ups
with carriers on mail delivery issues to ensure that 100% of the mail is being
delivered. The USPS is implementing tracking technologies to address some of
the mail delivery issues. By the end of August, all carriers will be equipped
with scanning software and built-in GPS.
Additionally, Ms. Wulf
has directed Postmaster Ackerman and her managers to do street checks. Post
office managers are currently riding behind carriers to ensure that efficient and proper
delivery is taking place, making observations for delivery and working with the
carriers and customers on the spot to address problems.
Overall, the USPS
representatives are eager to address the challenges in Evanston and will work with
the City and other partners to improve communications. City staff ensures that 3-1-1 requests for postal service concerns are reported directly to the postmaster. Residents may also register issues through this online survey: postalexperience.com/pos.
Bulk trash pick up begins April 17
The City of Evanston Streets and Sanitation Division offers the FREE removal of six cubic yards of bulk garbage twice a year (chart below). All trash must be set out by 7 a.m. City crews will not return for late set outs. If crews are unable to complete routes on Friday, collection will continue on Saturday.
Here are the rules:
Be less than six cubic yards per household. Six cubic yards is roughly equivalent to two couches or four chairs or one mattress and box spring, OR 25 medium garbage bags. Quantities that exceed six cubic yards will be tagged for a special pick-up and a fee will be assessed.
Be placed out in an orderly fashion, i.e. bagged, contained or bundled, no loose garbage. Crews cannot go on private property. Absolutely no hazardous materials will be collected, including batteries, gas, oil, asbestos, medical wastes, paint, etc.
Glass should be broken up, boxed, taped and labeled as glass.
Must be placed on the alley line or parkway. Crews will not remove items from private property.
Absolutely no construction material will be picked up.
No tires or appliances will be picked up. Please call 311 or (847) 448-4311 to arrange for the free removal of these items.
Crews will only remove bulk items; no garbage carts will be emptied.
Electronics are not permitted: It is illegal in Illinois to dispose of electronics in the trash. Visit cityofevanston.org/electronics for options.
Residents with larger debris removal needs can call 3-1-1 or 847-448-4311 to request a special pick-up. This alternative involves a charge.

Applications are now
available for the first Evanston Community Ambassadors program. The
program aims to educate participants about “all things Evanston,” allowing them
to make a positive impact in the community.

receive training from the City and will then have the opportunity to become
directly involved with the community by engaging with residents and visitors and participating in projects that will make a difference in Evanston.
Opportunities will include:

as a point of contact at public and community events on behalf of the City;
Promoting
Evanston as a great place to live, work and visit;

plan served by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon are now able to text 9-1-1
to report an emergency. For more information, visit cityofevanston.org/police/text-to-911.
Multi-family Recycling Pilot Information
Starting in February, the City launched a targeted pilot recycling program for multi-family apartment
buildings with six units or more serviced by Groot. The pilot program affects
some buildings in the 6th Ward, but NOT all. Just under 200 buildings were selected
to participate and they were selected based on the existing recycling truck
routes.
The pilot program is focused on increasing the recycling capacity (more
containers) at select buildings. This program does not affect what can/cannot
be recycled; the same items are still accepted. For more information, please
visit cityofevanston.org/mfrecycling
or call/text 847-448-4311.
