City of Evanston, Illinois sent this bulletin at 04/25/2014 01:46 PM CDT
Greetings:
Update:
East of the Tracks
While there is good stuff happening everywhere in
Evanston (have you been to Howard Street?) and on Central Street, you'll be
glad to know of developments in the Central Street Business District, east of
the Metra tracks. Check it out:
A lease has been secured for a restaurant at the corner of Eastwood Avenue and Central Street in the Central Station Apartments building. Stay tuned for more information.
Perennials has moved into its new location at 1808 Central Street. Look for the grand re-opening and celebration of Perennials' 25th Anniversary in Evanston on May 1.
Danon Gallery moved next door to Perennials at 1814 Central Street. Beginning May 15, Owner Bob Danon will host an art opening every third Thursday of the month.
Beth Welch will be turning the previous Danon Gallery space into a pastry shop, located on the southeast corner of Poplar Avenue and Central Street.
Karlson Kitchens has closed, but there have been many inquiries from prospective
tenants for the three-store space at 1811-15 Central Street (at Broadway Avenue).
The long-vacant building at 1620 Central Street, across from Mustard's Last Stand, is on the market and ready for redevelopment.
The CTA will begin to
rehabilitate the south stairwell in the Central Street CTA station, which is an Evanston historic landmark. We are currently awaiting longer-term and
larger-scale renovations of the Purple Line and its stations. In the meantime, the Chicago Mitzvah Campaign
will turn the retail space at the Central Street CTA station, 1022 Central
Street, into a hospitality suite for its Evanston Hospital patients and their
families.
New daily fee pay stations will be installed in the commuter parking lot along Poplar Avenue at the Central Street Metra Station.
Check out the design café at Evanston Imprintables, 1701 Central Street, where you can customize your own
apparel and accessories.

Please Don't:
Distracted Driving and Enforcement Initiative
The ban on using hand-held cell phones while driving has been in effect in Evanston for four years, resulting in 9,000 tickets issued for violation of the law. To emphasize our message about distracted driving on Evanston streets, the Evanston Police Department conducted an enforcement initiative yesterday in honor of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The enforcement resulted in 120 driving violations.
Since passage of Evanston's ban on hand-held
devices four years ago, the crash rate in Evanston has declined 17%, with 420
fewer roadway crashes since 2010. Please
put down your phone to drive.

Request: Be
mindful of school pedestrians, Kingsley/Haven Schools
With almost 1,200 students now enrolled at Kingsley Elementary and
Haven Middle Schools, traffic around the area has increased significantly. Please remember:
Traffic moves only northbound on Prairie Avenue during school arrival and dismissal times.
The eight crossing guards assigned to Kingsley/Haven schools will protect pedestrians at crosswalks first, then will assist with the flow of traffic once safety is ensured; be
patient.
Do not drop off students on Lincoln Street. Too many students cross the street mid-block without a crossing guard to assist them.
The City of Evanston and District 65 are re-examining
the parking regulations and signage on Prairie Avenue in conjunction with the
water main repairs and street resurfacing this summer.
Police will enforce the posted parking and traffic signs. Those driving while on their hand-held cell phone will be ticketed.
Encourage school children to walk and ride their bikes
to school. All schools have bike corrals
where students can lock them up.
Thank you to Haven Principal Kathy Roberson and Kingsley
Principal Tricia Murray for their guidance and assistance on these issues. And thank you to the Kingsley and Haven school
communities for looking out for everyone's children.
Recreate: Fairways
and Greens for you at Canal Shores
Canal Shores Golf Course, managed by
Tom Tully and the Evanston Wilmette Community Golf Course Association, is off
to a good start, notwithstanding the long winter. The course already has an increase in season
pass holders and registrations for the junior golf programs. The board of directors has raised and set
aside funds for youth scholarships for the junior golf programs. Explore the golf course's website here and its fairways along the north shore canal.
Looking for some local enrichment?
Check out the City of Evanston's website for CPR refresher courses taught by Evanston paramedic/firefighters, tour our water treatment facility on June 21 (second largest in the State of Illinois), and watch the "Superintendent's Spotlight" video about Evanston Township High School. While you're at it, grab a bite to eat. Evanston was just named one of the "hottest places to eat right now" by TimeOut Chicago magazine.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Julia Watson and Erik Zorn, new president and vice president of Northwestern University's Associated Student Government. Thank you to outgoing ASG officers, Ani Ajith and Alex
Van Atta, for their good work for the Northwestern student community.
