Upcoming Ward Meeting - Thursday, February 27

Ald. Delores Holmes and I will join forces for a combined 5th and 7th Ward meeting on Thursday, February 27 from 7 to 8:30 pm. The meeting will take place at the McCormick Tribune Center Forum, First Floor, located at 1870 Campus Drive on the Northwestern University campus. Free parking is available at the Lakeside Parking Structure at the south end of campus. The agenda will feature Evanston Myth-Busting, in addition to a report from Evanston Police Officer Scott Sengenberger, who serves on our police Problem-Solving Team. Thank you to Kevin Harris, VP for External Relations for Associated Student Government for assisting with the logistics.

Some Evanston mythology we hope to confirm or dispel with our panel of legal and historical experts: Are bowling alleys illegal? Did the City sell property to the University for its new visitor center? Do you violate the City Code when you spit on a sidewalk? Is Northwestern University a party school? Are the Roycemore buildings haunted?

Update: Whole Foods on Green Bay Road

It has been confirmed that Whole Foods has officially secured a sub-lease for the former Dominick's site at 2748 Green Bay Road in Evanston.

The opening of Whole Foods will not only be great for the neighborhood, but will also benefit the city once economic activity resumes at this location. In an effort to make a smooth transition into the new business, we will work with store representatives to minimize neighborhood disruption as they undertake renovations to the building. Civic Duty: Voting, Elections

You have until Tuesday, February 18 to register to vote in the March 18 primary elections. Early voting at the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge, begins on Monday, March 3 and ends on Saturday, March 15.

Residents who turn 18 years old before the general election on November 4 can register and vote in the March 18 primary. The ballot will include the Republican gubernatorial primary, a number of judicial races, and the referendum on Evanston Township dissolution.

The Central Street Neighbors Association will host a forum on the township dissolution referendum on Wednesday, February 19 beginning at 7 pm at Haven Middle School, 2417 Prairie Avenue. The League of Women Voters of Evanston will also host a forum on the township dissolution referendum on Saturday, March 1 from 10 am to noon, at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Avenue.

Update: Harley Clarke, IDNR, Evanston Art Center

On Monday, February 3, the aldermanic Human Services Committee affirmed its interest in pursuing a partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Coastal Management Program for renovation and lease of the Harley Clarke Mansion, 2603 Sheridan Road.

On a parallel track, the Committee directed City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz to give the Evanston Art Center a notice of termination to their lease, pursuant to its terms. The lease provides a 240-day notice of termination (8 months), in which the City will look for opportunities to help the Art Center complete a smooth transition to its yet-to-be-identified new space. In the meantime, the Evanston Art Center continues its extraordinary offerings of classes and programming.

Opportunity: Evanston Ecology Center Summer Camps

Environmentally-focused camps are great options for parents who want their kids to gain an appreciation of the outdoors, right here in Evanston. (Recommended reading: "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv).

Due to high demand for these camp sessions, lottery registration will be held from February 5 to 12, in order to fairly allocate spots in high demand camps. That's a good problem to have, even as the Evanston Ecology Center has expanded camp offerings.
