Science Up Close as Field Scientists Band EPL Falcons

Mary Hennen and Falcon
Karen Danczak Lyons and falcon

Four young falcons (eyasses), three males and one female, were scooped out of their EPL fourth floor nest on Tuesday for banding and blood draws by Field Museum scientists, Mary Hennen (pictured above) and Josh Engel. More than 150 people, about a third of them children, gathered to watch science up close. Front row seats went to those who won a contest for naming the birds. Welcome to young falcons Tango, Lightning Bolt and Ford Falcon who will soon fly from the nest. Mary Hennen asked to choose one of the names this year, announcing at the event that one be named Karen after EPL Library Director Karen Danczak Lyons (left with Karen the falcon). Keep your eye on the growing birds at epl.org/falconcam
