Adult Programs and Summer Reading

Summer Reading is for adults too. Be one of the next 26 adults to write a brief book review at the Main Library and you'll get a pair of Ravinia tix! Participate all summer long and you'll be entered into a raffle for the Grand Prize Package: $100 gift certificate to SPACE, plus $50 for good eats at Union Pizzeria, plus SPACE swag. 

Please help us reach our community goal of 125,000 summer reading points and take pride in Evanston as a city of readers. Sign up here or at any location. Read, come to programs like a community drum circle or 3-D Printing for Adults, earn points, and enter raffles to win gift certificates to local restaurants, boutiques, book stores.


Sheila

Sheila Von Wiese-Mack Memorial Concert: Sat., June 13, 2:30-4:30 pm. Music lovers are encouraged to attend the piano dedication and memorial concert performed in tribute to Sheila von Wiese-Mack (pictured), wife of Chicago music icon James Mack. David Yonan, violin, will perform a recital with pianist Steven Greene, which will include Fine Arts Music Society guest artists Lawrence Block, cello, William Dresden, piano, Susan Merdinger, piano, Mathias Tacke, violin.


Vivian Maier

Living with a Genius: Three Years with Vivian Maier: Wed., June 17, 7 pm. Evanstonian Linda Matthews recounts the years Vivian Maier (pictured) lived and worked with her family as a nanny in the 1980s.

Becoming a Welcoming Community: 50 Years Later: Thurs., June 25, 7 pm. Fifty years after Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke about the racially exclusive nature of Chicago's North Shore -- how are we doing? A panel discussion on fair and affordable housing.

Read to the Rhythm

Read to the Rhythm Summer Reading Program runs from June 1 to July 31. Sign-up is underway online or at any Library location. Our kick-off event is the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo on Saturday, June 13, at 1 pm. Have fun, win prizes, and keep reading skills sharp over the summer.

The Library is the recipient of a $15,000 grant to host The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. As a community, we'll be reading, discussing, and celebrating Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. Read more.


Celiac Project

Wed., July 8, 7PM. Join us for a screening of The Celiac Project, a first-of-its-kind documentary about life before and after the diagnosis of celiac disease.The inspiration for this film came after the director and Evanston native, Michael Frolichstein, struggled with a series of "mystery aliments" before finally being diagnosed with celiac disease at age 40.

Survey says

We recently conducted a library survey across all wards of Evanston, receiving 1281 responses. Nearly half the respondents report using the library at least once a week. When asked what would make them use the library more frequently, 41% said "more time to spare" and 37% cited the need for "free parking."
