Live Healthy Iowa

Registration for the Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships is open through Thursday, May 11, 2017

The Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships event was founded in 2015 to continue the tradition of the Hershey® Track and Field Games in Iowa. Like its predecessor, this event is a no-fee, state-wide event that requires no special equipment to participate. Local meets are hosted all around Iowa, giving participants a chance to compete in their hometowns. Local meet champions will have the opportunity to participate in the state meet held in Marshalltown.

The Iowa City event, hosted by Iowa City Parks and Recreation, will be held on Friday, May 19 at Raffensperger Track, Bates Field (City High), located at 1900 Morningside Drive. The track will open at 5 p.m. for warm-ups; races begin at 5:45 p.m.

Youth must be age 9-14 to participate. Participants must compete in his/her age division based off of what age the participant is as of December 31, 2017. All athletes must reside in Iowa, and can only participate in one local meet or they will be disqualified from meet in-progress and shall not advance to the state competition.

Volunteers are needed! We are looking for volunteers to help with the meet. If you are interested, contact Matt Eidahl at matt-eidahl@iowa-city.org.

Water Safety Month

May is Water Safety Month, and Iowa City Parks and Recreation (ICPR) wants to make sure you and your family have a fun, safe summer when recreating around water. Here are a few water safety tips from our Aquatics Program Supervisor Matthew Eckhardt:

- There is no substitute for supervision. Keeping an active eye on your child is the best way to keep them safe this summer while swimming. At any of the ICPR pools, children under the age of 5 are required to have a parent/guardian within arm’s reach at all times. We advise that any child under the age of 10 be watched very closely, and encourage older children to check in and take breaks often to avoid exhaustion.

- Know your child’s swimming ability. This can change over the course of a few months. If your child has not swam since last summer, it will take time to rebuild those muscles that have not been used. Remind them to start slow and work their way back. If your child needs a lifejacket, please make sure they are both coast guard approved and fit properly.

- Learn to swim. The City of Iowa City, as well as Coralville and North Liberty, maintain a full range of swimming lessons for all levels and abilities, with options to meet your schedule. The City of Iowa City also offers swim lesson scholarships for low-income families so that any child that wants to learn to swim has the chance to do so.

Ready to learn to swim? Visit www.icgov.org/pools to view the full range of lessons available through Iowa City Parks and Recreation.
