Kestrel boxes installed around Iowa City

Kestrel Box

American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) are North America’s smallest falcon and range extensively throughout the Americas. Unfortunately, long-term Breeding Bird Surveys, Christmas Bird Counts, migration data, and even nest box programs are showing regional population declines throughout the continent over the last century. Iowa Raptor Project Director Shawn Hawks and Brandon MacDougall, a doctoral student with the University of Iowa’s Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, are currently putting up nest boxes on City of Iowa City property in order to better understand local and regional American Kestrel biology, especially in terms of conservation and population decline and as a management strategy to increase cavity availability for nesting and roosting of the American Kestrel.

Notice of temporary closure: Mercer Park Tennis Courts

Starting the first week of April through June 30, 2017, the Mercer Park tennis courts will be closed for renovation and repair. The project involves the removal of three tennis courts, which will be replaced by eight new pickle ball courts. The project also will include surface repair and repainting of the remaining three tennis courts. ICPR spring tennis programs will be held at City Park to accommodate the closure.
