Take a look at all the Iowa City Recreation Division can offer you and your family this season. The Summer Recreation Activity Guide is now available online and will be available in hardcopy at several City facilities during the week of April 11.
Register for classes online and in-person begining Wednesday, April 27.
Online registration opens at 12:01 a.m. (one minute past midnight) on the day registration begins. To register online, either set up your new ActiveNet account or to log into your existing account. You’ll be able to sign up and pay for classes online through the ActiveNet system.
In-person registration opens at 8 a.m. on the day registration begins (see above) at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center at 220 S. Gilbert Street, and at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center / Scanlon Gym at 2701 Bradford Drive.

Registration is now open for the Recreation Division’s summer camp. Camps will run weekly starting on June 6 and ending August 5. The camp day runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with optional supervised play from 7:30 – 9 a.m. and from 4 - 5:30 p.m. at no additional cost. Camp Thunder will cater to children in grades K-3, Camp Lightning is for children grades 4-6, and STEAM Camp, which will focus on subjects related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math is available for children in grades K-6. Camps Thunder and Lightning will offer mixed recreation programming with themes for each week.

Register now for the Live Healthy Iowa Youth Track & Field Championship.
This local event will be held on Friday, May 20 at Raffensperger Track, Bates Field (City High), located at 1900 Morningside Drive in Iowa City. Track will open at 5 p.m. for warm-up; races begin at 5:45 p.m.
Participants must compete in his/her age group. A participant’s age division is based off of what age the participant is as of December 31, 2016. Age groups include 9 & 10-year-olds, 11 &12-year-olds, and 13 & 14-year-olds.

2016 Iowa City Community Garden Plot program registration is open and there are still a few spots left. Register now at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street. Registrants will be required to sign a lease agreement to maintain a plot through Oct. 1, 2016. The Iowa City Community Gardens are located at Wetherby Park, 2400 Taylor Drive and Chadek Green Park, 1920 Friendship Street.

At the end of March, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department welcomed Kumi Morris to the staff. Though Morris is not new to the City of Iowa City, she has taken a new role as Facility Manager. In this role, she will oversee City facilities’ future development projects, energy monitoring and use, and maintenance staff.
Prior to joining the Parks and Recreation Dept., Morris served as the City’s Architectural Services and Energy Coordinator in Public Works, where she helped coordinate many new City facility building projects, including a tornado shelter at Hickory Hill Park, Fire Station 2, Fire Station 4, the East Side Recycling Center, and most recently the new Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.
Morris grew up in Karlsruhe, Germany,
attended University of Arizona in Tucson for her undergraduate degree and Iowa
State University for her master's degree in Architecture Studies. She has lived in Iowa City for
twenty years and is very active with the University of Iowa Museum of Art,
including a stint as President of the Member’s Council.
