We need your input! The City of Iowa City, with the assistance of the Friends of Hickory Hill Park, is developing a Master Plan for Hickory Hill Park. Park elements to be considered include park programming,wayfinding and signage, bridge and trail improvements and park access. A public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 13 at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street, from 1 - 3 p.m. to discuss and gather ideas. A brief formal presentation will occur at 1:30 p.m. with informal public input sessions before and after the presentation. Please stop by at your convenience.

Looking for a fun and educational outlet for your child during Spring Break? Look no further than the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Spring Break Camps, scheduled March 14-18 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration forms are now available at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street, or the Mercer/Scanlon facility, 2701 Bradford Drive. Registration forms are also available online at www.icgov.org/event/spring-break-camp.

This year, there are three Spring Break Camp options available: a five-day morning STEM camp that will focus on science, technology, engineering, and math; a morning STEAM camp (STEM plus “A” for art); and afternoon Adventure Camps.
Save the date: Summer Camp 2016 ICPR Summer Camp will run June 6 - August 5. Registration forms and camp guides will be available the week of March 7. Registration opens March 30. Examples of camp programs include: "Seuss on the Loose," "Nutty about Nature," "In a Galaxy Far, Far Away" and many more!

Over 1,000 athletes from all over the state of Iowa will be in Iowa City on March 11-12 for the 27th Annual State Special Olympics Mid-Winter Tournament. Athletes will compete in basketball, gymnastics, powerlifting and cheerleading.The event takes place at the University of Iowa Field House and Iowa City West High School.
Meet Mercedes
Mercedes Nicks, age 17, will be competing on the Special Olympics Dance Team at this year's Mid- Winter Games. After participating in her high school's Dance Marathon last spring, she is excited to continue her love of dance on a competition team. The Dance Team has been busy practicing each week in preparation.
Mercedes, who is excited to perform and see how her team does, says, "It doesn't matter if we win or lose as long as we do our best." Other hobbies of hers include kickball, basketball, and just having fun. Come out and support Mercedes and her teammates as they wow the judges with their USA-themed dance routine at the Mid-Winter Games on Saturday, March 12 at Iowa City West High School.

The Iowa City Recreation Division is offering a beginning taekwondo class that teaches respect, discipline, and self control while learning various kicks, blocks, hand strikes, and forms. Uniforms are not required in the beginning program. The Iowa City Recreation Division also offers an advanced class that consists of advanced kicks, blocks, hand strikes, and forms, sparring and competition that is available for students as well. The next session begins April 5.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, April 4 at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, located at 220 South Gilbert Street. Plots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and interested gardeners are encouraged to arrive early on the first day of registration. The Recreation Center building will open at 6 a.m. Numbers will be available on the lower level of the building near the Customer Service desk. Staff will call those numbers in order beginning at 7:30 a.m. These numbers are to hold your place in line only; they do not represent your garden plot number assignment. Registrants will be required to sign a lease agreement to maintain a plot through Oct. 1.

Lifeguard Training
Become a lifeguard! Training courses are now available through Iowa City Parks and Recreation. Several class dates are available:
March 23-26 April 1-3 April 20-24 May 6-8
Weeknight classes generally run 5-9 p.m. and weekend classes run 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Cost: $140
Successful participants will receive an American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, which is valid for two years.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water
Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health
Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens
Training courses and/or modules.
