Junque collectors, upcyclers and artists: Submit your applications for new Rummage ReDux program
Junque collectors, upcyclers, artists, and craftspeople: The Rummage in the Ramp Planning Committee is accepting applications for a new project called Rummage ReDux, which supports the creation of artwork from items donated to Rummage in the Ramp, Iowa City’s annual mega-reuse and recycling event. Rummage ReDux will take the concept of reuse one step further by demonstrating how a little love, creativity and skill can convert usable, as-is, donated items from something that’s simply serviceable to something downright spectacular.
Selected applicants, who may include Johnson County individuals or businesses, will be allowed to choose one item from Rummage in the Ramp at no charge to repair, repurpose, or upcycle. Participants will be invited to work on their item during the last day of Rummage in the Ramp at a “meet the artist” event on Sunday, Aug. 2. Finished items will then be showcased at up to three public events in October and November.
Application submission procedure and requirements
Submit a one-page statement describing the applicant’s experience and interest in the project.
Submit a current resume (no more than two pages) and images of previous work (no more than six).
Applications must be sent electronically in a .pdf format to jennifer-jordan@iowa-city.org by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 20. All applications will be acknowledged within one working day.
Submitted materials will become the property of the Rummage in the Ramp Planning Committee.
Selection criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on the proven ability of the applicant(s) to complete the project in a timely manner and the creativity represented in examples of their work and statements.
Applicants who are selected to participate will:
Choose one Rummage in the Ramp item, priced at $50 or less. There will be no cost to the Rummage ReDux participant for the item.
Repair / repurpose / upcycle or otherwise improve the selected item. Expenses for the work must be less than $100.
Have the item ready to showcase by Thursday, Oct. 1.
Transport and present the item at three community showcases tentatively scheduled as follows: The Iowa City Downtown District Gallery Walk on Friday, Oct. 2; the University of Iowa Museum First Friday event on Friday, Nov. 6 or Friday, Dec. 4; and the City of Iowa City’s America Recycles Day event on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the East Side Recycling Center.
The participant will prepare a photo board with photos taken by the artist of the item before and during the repair / repurpose / upcycle project.
The participant will retain all rights to the item throughout the duration of the ReDux events.
The City of Iowa City will:
Provide an initial commission of $100 stipend per artist to fund materials necessary for the project.
Feature the event and your name and/or business in Rummage in the Ramp promotions.
Facilitate and promote the three community showcase opportunities.
If desired by more than half of the selected artists, facilitate an auction for selling items at the Sunday, Nov. 15 event, with proceeds to be retained by artists.
