The City of Iowa City launched a new website on June 17 that also resulted in changes to the Park Bench newsletter. This new format will take less time to produce and will also enable us to get news out more quickly. If you're already a Park Bench subscriber, there's no need to do anything more. However, if you want to sign up for additional City news or cancel your current subscription, visit https://icgov.org/e-subscriptions
After receiving several requests for more bike parking at the
Farmers Markets, the Parks Division converted an underutilized space next to
the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp at the corner of Washington and Van Buren
Streets and turned it into what we're now calling, "The City's
Patio." The new space offers five new bike racks and a seating area
where people can enjoy their coffee break, lunch hour, or savor a fresh
treat from the Farmers Market. The City's Patio, under the canopy of trees and
adjacent to Ralston Creek, provides a sweet little respite and a slice of
nature right in the middle of town. Bike on down and check it out!
What are your plans for the Fourth of
July? How about a cool swim at City Park Pool? Head on over to Upper
City Park on Saturday, July 4th from 1 to 5 p.m. for our “Star
Spangled Pool Day” and $2 admission from 1 to 8 p.m.
Other special events at the pool this summer include:
Mother’s
Day: On Sunday, July 26 from 1 to 5 p.m.,
bring Mom to the pool for an afternoon of outdoor water fun. All Moms get in
free with a child’s paid admission.
Community
donations: Give help to people in
need on Monday, August 3 when we fill a wading pool with
canned foods and non-perishable food items for the Crisis
Center. Bring in an item and swim at no charge all day long.
The Grant Wood and Wetherby Neighborhood
Associations, with support from a neighborhood PIN grant awarded by the City of Iowa City, will
sponsor a Summer Playground Program for students from all areas of Iowa City who have completed kindergarten
through 6th grade in 2015. It will run from July 6 through August 14.
The program will operate Monday through Friday, bringing more fun to summer with games, arts and crafts, nature activities, sports, and water play in the park's splash pads. Morning sessions will be held from 9:30 to
11:30 a.m. at Fairmeadows Park, 2500 Miami Drive. Afternoon sessions are
scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wetherby Park, 2400 Taylor Drive. In case of
rain or inclement weather, the program will be cancelled for the day.
To enroll,
parents or guardians must register their child onsite the first time he or she attends. There is no
fee to participate. The program has been organized by the City’s Recreation Division and will be
supervised by trained Recreation staff.
For more information, call 319-356-5100.
The Recreation Division has organized a Youth Triathlon on Saturday, July 18 at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center. Four age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12) will compete in swimming, biking, and running events.
The fee to compete is $25 per person. Participants must register by July 11 at https://icgov.org/city-government/departments-and-divisions/recreation. Click on “Registration for Activities” in the right-hand column to register online through ActiveNet. For more information, visit https://icgov.org/youthsportinfo.
Community sponsors and volunteers are needed to assist with this event. Contact Program Supervisor Matt Eidahl at 319-887-6081 or e-mail matt-eidahl@iowa-city.org if you can help.
For the second consecutive year, the
Iowa City Parks and Recreation Foundation will host a golf outing to raise
funds for the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department’s Swim Lesson
Scholarship Program. Last year, nearly $4,000 was raised to help provide free
swim lessons for children and others who could not afford them.
This
year, the event is scheduled Friday, September 11. Get your foursome
together and watch for more details in the upcoming months!
