Sportsman's and Coastal Day at the Capitol a Success

Sportsmen’s groups and coastal conservation groups from around the state met with state leaders and lawmakers for Sportsmen’s and Coastal Day at the Capitol. Special thanks to Governor Nathan Deal for taking the time to recognize outdoor enthusiasts across the state and the impact they have on both the economy and wildlife conservation in Georgia!

The Legislative Front

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) introduced the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015. This bill would benefit recreational shooters and hunters.

Walleye

Wildlife Resources is also preparing for a busy spring production season at state fish hatcheries.  A wide variety of species will be produced for stocking in public waters around the state, to improve fishing and fish populations. Species raised in Georgia’s hatcheries include walleye, rainbow, brown, and brook trout, striped bass and hybrid striped bass, lake sturgeon, American shad, largemouth bass, and channel catfish.  Last year, nearly 2 million striped bass fingerlings and 900,000 walleye fingerlings were produced in DNR hatcheries and stocked in state waters in addition to other species.   By establishing and sustaining fish species in Georgia waters, we are creating new angling opportunities and developing more demand for fishing products and services.   This photo shows walleye eggs being hatched at the GoFish Education Center and Hatchery.  The center is open to school groups during the week and open to the public Friday through Sunday.  Stop by the center, located at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, just off I-75, and see fish production in action during March and April.

Tacklebox

New Tackle Box Display

An interactive tackle box display is being installed at the Go Fish Education Center and Hatchery in Perry, Georgia this month. The tackle box has many popular fresh and salt water lures that visitors will be able to see what fish to target and what techniques work best.  This is another part of the Wildlife Resources Division’s efforts to teach anglers to fish successfully.
