6. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, one of eight
regional councils, conserves and manages fish stocks from three to 200 miles
offshore of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida.
Georgia is home to more species of black bass than any other
state. Of course, we also hold the long-time world record (recently tied,
but not broken!) of 22 lbs 4 oz for the most well-known species of black bass,
the largemouth. We are participating in a
regional effort to conserve and protect some of the unique species of black
bass that live in Georgia rivers and streams, like the shoal bass.
Through this program, we leverage state funds and Sportfish Restoration funds
to receive grants that help DNR and its partners do more work to conserve these
species and increase fishing and tourism opportunities in Georgia. Read more about the Native Black Bass Initiative
