We are at work using your Sportfish Restoration excise tax
dollars and state license fee funds to install a new canoe and kayak launch on
the upper Ocmulgee River between Lake Jackson dam and GA Highway 83. This section of the river is attractive to anglers because of the shoal
bass, largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish, and catfish fishing available. It also offers a fun and relatively easy paddling experience with enough rapids
and shoals to make it interesting. Canoeing and kayaking are one of
the fastest growing areas of the fishing and outdoors industry right now,
offering relatively low cost, unique, and exciting outdoor experiences that are
attractive to many people. We are providing family-friendly access to attract newcomers to
Georgia’s great river fishing through construction of boating launch sites on
the Ocmulgee River and throughout Georgia. We are also providing guides to
river fishing, river maps, and other facilities and information that make great
fishing trips possible for everyone, including new anglers that could be your
next new customer.
Did you know...Georgia ranks 7th in the nation in attracting non-resident hunters to the state. State rankings are on page 9 of the report.
Georgia receives approximately $14 million dollars in federal Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration funds each year. These funds come from a federal tax on ammunition, guns, fishing equipment and motorboat fuel. To receive federal funds, Georgia must spend 100% of state revenue collected from hunting/fishing licenses on sport fish and wildlife management to benefit hunters and anglers.
