Your State Parks Day

September 27 is “Your State Parks Day”

Georgians are invited to explore State Parks & Historic Sites with free admission, dozens of volunteer projects and family-friendly events on Saturday, September 27. Sponsored by Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, the statewide celebration of National Public Lands Day showcases how parks enrich communities and the importance of local volunteerism. Choose from activities ranging from trail maintenance and river clean-ups, to guided hikes and astronomy programs.

DNR’s Recreation Map

Check out the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ interactive map to explore recreation across the Peach State. Powered by Google, the map includes state parks, wildlife management areas, public fishing areas, boat ramps, historic sites and outdoor education centers managed by the DNR. Easily search by category to find locations to camp, hunt, hike, fish or explore history.

Flint RiverQuarium

The next time you’re staying at a Georgia State Park near Albany, stop by the Flint RiverQuarium. September 5-6 is their 10th Birthday Splash, with a temporary exhibit on butterflies.  Owned by the state, the aquarium teaches about the mighty Flint River and showcases the importance of clean water and the species which make it their home.

Panola Mountain State Park near Stockbridge

Test your aim during this 2nd annual archery tournament featuring 3-D and static range competitions for ages 9 and older. Participants must register in advance; walk-in registration will be limited to space available.  $30-$40 plus $5 parking. 770-389-7801.

Red Top Mtn

Harvest at the Homestead

Red Top Mountain State Park on Lake Allatoona

Fall was a busy time at the homestead. Enjoy old-fashioned toys and games, crafts, blacksmithing and cooking near our authentic log cabin.  The parking fee will be waived on September 27 as part of Your State Parks Day.  $5 parking on September 28. 770-975-0055.

Sapelo birders

Sapelo Island Birding Adventure

Reynold’s Mansion on Sapelo Island

This adventure features birding with expert ornithologists around a barrier island. Habitats include open fields, maritime forests, marshes and beaches.
