New Cabins & Boardwalk at Laura S. Walker State Park

Guests at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross can soon enjoy sipping coffee from their cabin porch while watching wildlife around the lake. On February 20, park officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for six new Sportsman’s Cabins and a 1,500-foot boardwalk. The public is invited to the 11 a.m. ceremony. Each cabin can accommodate six guests with two bedrooms and a sleeper sofa. Kitchens are furnished with dishes, and large screened porches sport rocking chairs. Each cabin has its own grill and picnic table outside as well. Guests may bring their own linens or can rent them from the park. Rates are $125 per night, with a $25 linen fee and $45 pet fee.

“Hidden Gems” Revealed During Our 85th Anniversary

Georgia’s State Park system turns 85 this year, and we’re proud to have two of the oldest state parks in the country: Indian Springs and Vogel. This year is also the 50th anniversary of the Dahlonega Gold Museum opening its doors. In celebration, we’re unveiling “Hidden Gems” at all of our sites. Throughout 2016, join ranger-led events to discover secret sunset spots, a moonshine truck that tumbled down a mountain, pitcher plant bogs and more.

You may have heard about Panola Mountain's unique ecology, but are you ready to discover some of the mountain's lesser-known history? Join a guide to head off the trail and explore Panola's hidden cemeteries, whiskey stills, beaver dams and more. This 6-mile hike is strenuous. Register in advance. Old Jail House Hike -- Hidden Gem

February 13, 11 a.m.

Join a ranger to hike around Terrora Circle by the lake and learn about the old jail house, one of the park’s Hidden Gems. The hike is ½ mile long. Meet at the old jail house. Bring water and good walking shoes. $5 plus $5 parking. 706-754-7981

Meet National & State Park Rangers at Fernbank

February 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Put on your ranger hat and join us at Fernbank Museum of Natural History to help the National Park Service celebrate its 100th anniversary. During this family fun day, you’ll be inspired by the new IMAX film “National Parks Adventure.” See camping demonstrations and live reptiles, plus talk to state and national park rangers. Museum and IMAX admission applies.
