Action: Marine Fisheries Management items discussed in Tallahassee
Information: Items on the agenda included:
Discussions on:
- Federal fishery management updates
- FWC and Marine Fisheries Annual Workplan
- Red drum stock assessment: Visit MyFWC.com/RedDrum2016 to share public input on this assessment and management of red drum.
Potential regulatory changes on:
- Red snapper (Gulf): 2016 recreational season proposed. Will be on the April Commission meeting agenda for final public hearing. Proposed season will open Saturdays and Sundays in May starting May 7; then open May 28 through July 10 continuously; and open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, and on Labor Day.
- Gag and black grouper (Gulf): Increasing recreational size limit for both species from 22 to 24 inches total length and setting gag recreational season to June 1-Dec. 31 in all state waters except Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties (these counties have an April 1-June 30 season). Approved. Effective after federal changes go into effect.
- Tabled: Dwarf seahorse: Proposal would have prohibited harvest north of Anclote Key State Park Lighthouse and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, reduced recreational and commercial bag/trip limits, and created an annual commercial quota. The Commission decided not to implement any of the proposed changes at this time.
