TALLAHASSEE –
The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection joins the city of Tallahassee and Leon County Government on
Saturday, April 25 to host the Tallahassee Healthy Communities Festival, a free,
family friendly event celebrating Earth Day. Featuring a fun
run/walk, exhibitor booths, live entertainment, educational demonstrations and
food vendors, the festival will share sustainable practices that make our community healthy.
“Everything the department does is geared toward creating healthier and more sustainable communities,” DEP’s Environmental Education
Director Greg Ira said. “Through educational events such as this, and sustainable programs like our Green Lodging and Clean Marina programs, we provide opportunities for Floridians to make informed and responsible choices that will shape their future.”
The celebration will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a 3K
fun run/walk sponsored by Whole Child Leon. To participate in the fun run/walk, please
register online here
or call Whole Child Leon at 850-561-0100 for more information. There is a
suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12.
All proceeds benefit the South City Multi-Sport Club, a program that encourages
fitness and exercise through the sport of triathlon. Move.Tallahassee will also
be hosting a 3-mile walk around the outer loop of Cascades Park starting at 9
a.m. Registration is not required to participate in this walk.
The event's 55 education-oriented exhibitor
booths will offer a wide range of activities, from learning how to compost to
building water-bottle rockets. DEP will host several educational and interactive booths.
From 10 a.m. to noon in the Prime Meridian Plaza, kids will
have a chance to visit Smokey the Bear and Sparky from the Tallahassee Fire
Department. Capital City Cyclists will host a bike rodeo where kids can learn bike safety.
Local performers at the event will
include the Young Actors Theater, Raa Middle School jazz band, reggae group
Positive Vibrations Redeemed and the Trashtronauts, a musical group that plays
instruments made entirely of recycled materials.
The theme of this year’s event, which will be held rain or shine, is healthy
environment, healthy economy and healthy people. Follow the fun on social media
