GTM RESEARCH RESERVE OFFERS
LECTURE, "MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT... RIGHT
WHALES"
~Lecture series provides great opportunity
to learn more about marine mammals~
PONTE VEDRA BEACH -
The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve invites
the public to attend a free marine mammals lecture, "More than You Ever
Wanted to Know About ... Right Whales." This event will be held on
Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Reserve's Environmental Education Center in Ponte Vedra
Beach.
"February is the middle
of right whale calving season and a great opportunity to learn about this
marine mammal," said Michael Shirley, director of the GTM Research
Reserve.
The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered whale species in
the world. They migrate between feeding grounds in the Gulf of Maine and
winter calving areas off Georgia and Florida. Their lifespan is believed to be
at least 50 years, and some may live more than a century.
The guest speaker, Jen
Jakush, is a biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission. She received a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the
University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She has worked with FWC's North
Atlantic Right Whale Project since 2008.
On the third Wednesday of every other month, visitors can learn “more than they
ever wanted to know” about plant and animal life found in estuarine habitats.
Topics are presented by knowledgeable volunteers, as well as researchers and
members of environmental organizations. These events are free with paid
entrance to the Education Center, so space is limited.
Reservations can be made
