STATE PARK TO HOST WHEELCHAIR DERBY

~Open invitational wheelchair derby to be held at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring~

SEBRING – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Park Service, together with multiple motorcycle clubs in Central Florida, invite individuals who use wheelchairs to the Highlands Hammock Inaugural Wheelchair Derby on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The Wheelchair Derby will feature a 5K Stride and Stroll Run, along with other recreational activities and events. Competitive events will be held for all age divisions including children, teens, adults and seniors. Trophies will be presented to division winners and event ribbons will be presented to all participants.

Organizers hope to raise $8,000 for the purchase of an all-terrain Nomad power wheelchair. The Nomad will provide visitors who have mobility disabilities independent access to trails in the park. Once the park acquires a Nomad, it will be available to park visitors with disabilities for free use.

The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum will also be open during the event. Local bands will be performing live music at the event and food will be available for purchase.

Wheelchair Derby participants, together with family, friends and/or support team members traveling in the same vehicle, will receive free park admission. Regular park entry fees will apply for others: $6 per vehicle (up to 8 people), $4 per single occupant vehicle and $4 per motorcycle.

There is no event registration fee, however, the park is requesting pre-registration. To pre-register, call the park at 863-386-6094. Registration may also be completed on the morning of the derby, but please notify the park of intent to participate by Feb. 18 and provide event entry information.
