TALLAHASSEE — Florida
Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Jon Steverson has appointed
Craig Varn as
Special Counsel on Water Policy and Legal Affairs. In
this role, Varn will serve as the department’s General Counsel and will also
oversee the Office of Water Policy.
“Craig’s experience in environmental and
water policy will serve the department well as we continue to work closely with
the water management districts on the state’s most pressing water matters,” said DEP Secretary Jon Steverson. “I’m
confident his expertise will benefit the agency as we work to protect Florida’s
water resources.”
Varn has more than 15 years experience working with the
private and public sectors, including legislative and executive branches of
government, agencies, Cabinet and gubernatorial commissions on growth management,
environmental and local government issues.
Varn most recently served as an attorney with MansonBolves.
He has previously served as the chief policy advisor to former Senate President Jeff
Atwater on all environmental, growth management, agriculture and utility
issues. Prior to becoming an attorney, Varn worked as an engineer designing
stormwater management facilities, drainage systems and support structures and
assisted clients in environmental permitting for stormwater management
facilities.
Varn has a law degree and master’s degree in business
administration from Florida State University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree
in civil engineering from the University of Florida.
