Participants learn how to build a rain barrel and help reduce stormwater runoff.

APALACHICOLA - The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve’s Coastal Training Program is hosting a rain barrel workshop on Saturday, Feb. 14, where participants will learn how to construct a rain barrel to harvest rain for future use. This will be the sixth rain barrel workshop that the Apalachicola Research Reserve’s Coastal Training Program has conducted.

The workshop will also teach participants about stormwater runoff pollution, the impact it has on water quality and how rain harvesting can reduce this type of pollution. Other green infrastructure technology such as rain gardens, green roofs and bioswales will also be discussed prior to the hands-on portion of the workshop.

Following the discussion, participants will assemble a 35-gallon rain barrel that they can take home. The Coca-Cola Company donated the barrels used in this workshop.
