WORKING
TOGETHER TO PROTECT SOUTHWEST FLORIDA’S MOST VITAL TREASURE: WATER
~Bike,
run, walk or longboard across Charlotte Harbor to celebrate its natural beauty~
CHARLOTTE HARBOR - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's South
District is partnering with the Charlotte Harbor
Environmental Center for the 7th annual Hands Across the Harbor Peace River Bridge Run, Ride
or Roll. This event encourages residents to enjoy the natural beauty of the harbor while learning how to protect it.
Hands Across the Harbor includes an 8k
competitive run, 5k fun walk, 10-mile non-competitive bicycle ride, 20-mile
non-competitive bicycle ride and 8k longboard race. The morning will kick-off
with a yoga warm-up stretch by the Yoga Sanctuary. After the race, participants
will enjoy a pancake breakfast served by the Charlotte County Fire/EMS staff.
Awards and raffle prizes will follow.
The Charlotte Harbor Watershed
spans from Venice in Sarasota County to San Carlos Bay in Lee County. Participants can visit the DEP booth to learn
more about this estuary and how to protect Florida’s waterways and drinking
water. Each attendee will receive a one-day pass
to an award-winning Florida State Park.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the
youth education programs at the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center,
Alligator Creek facility. Over 2,000 students per year have the opportunity to
participate in the 4th-grade Field Studies and the 2nd-grade Seagrass Wading Adventures. Through these programs children explore the natural habitat in both
classroom and field exercises.
