DEP TO CELEBRATE WORLD WETLANDS DAY AT CORKSCREW
SWAMP SANCTUARY
~DEP partners with Audubon to host three-day wetlands event~
NAPLES –The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s South
District is partnering with Audubon Florida to celebrate World Wetlands Day at
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples. World Wetlands Day was created in 1971 to
raise public awareness on the importance and value of wetlands. This year’s
festival theme is “Wetlands for our Future.”
The festival features activities for all ages throughout the
three-day event, including guided boardwalk tours, a kids’ photo walk, a farmers
market, live music, a backcountry dune buggy adventure and an art gallery.
Children and adults alike can visit discovery stations to learn about
alligators, panthers, aquatic macro invertebrates and other important species
that live in southwest Florida wetlands.
Kids will enjoy nature crafts and
discover critters in the pond using dip nets. Guests can also help protect the
wetlands by participating in the World Water Monitoring Challenge with DEP South
District staff on Saturday at the display booths. For more details on the event, click here. Reservations are required for select
activities. Space is limited.
Wetlands are ecosystems that link terrestrial and aquatic
environments Wetlands provide essential habitat for a variety of species, including birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Many commercially
important species use wetlands for spawning and nursery habitat, including fish
and shellfish. Wetlands also help filter water that moves into lakes, rivers,
streams and the ocean.
