DEP TO HOST STYRENE REGULATIONS AND SAFETY WORKSHOP

~The department invites you to attend this educational workshop on the regulation and proper handling of styrene~

SARASOTA – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's South District invites you to a workshop regarding styrene regulations and safety on Friday, Dec. 12. DEP will be presenting with OSHA at the workshop hosted by the Southwest Florida Marine Industries Association.

The event comes as one of many great partnerships the DEP has developed to provide training in the marine industry. The workshop will feature discussions on the permitting, regulation, compliance assurance of styrene. The workshop is targeted toward boat builders and other parties interested in styrene regulations.

Styrene is a colorless to yellow liquid with an aromatic odor, almost like floral odor. It occurs naturally in small quantities in some plants and food and is also found in coal tar. Commercial styrene is used in the production of plastic and resin. Styrene products are used in rubber, plastic, paints, insulation, fiberglass, pipes, automobile, cultured marbles and boat manufacturing. Styrene is regulated by EPA and OSHA.

The event will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude around 3 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $20 per person. Those attending must RSVP by either calling 239-656-7083 or emailing laura@swfmla.com.
